"New" Old Atari Vector Spotted!!! Laser Spirograph!!!
« on: August 28, 2009, 01:54:03 am »
I visited the Detroit Science Center & spotted an Asteroids/Lunar Lander cabinet.  What game could this be?  I've seen Lunar Lander in a few science museums...but where's the side art???

Laser Spirograph marquee????

Hey, it's a science experiment!  In an Atari cab!  Certainly a better life for an Atari B&W X-Y cab than many of their unfortunate demises...

There's a laser in the control panel.  It's pointing at a pair of mirrors, each of which is mounted askew on a rotating disk.  The 2 knobs control the RPM of the 2 disks.  Then the light must bounce off a couple of mirrors inside the cab & gets rear-projected onto a flat screen where the tube once was.

Playing with the knobs gives you all sorts of funky polar coordinates images like a cardioid, as well as your favorite Spirograph-type images.

Pretty neat.  Wonder what became of the guts...?  I checked the back side for any Atari badges or stamps, but it's clean & plain & black.

this shows how much I procrastinate, even the small things..... I still have a picture of that thing on my phone, I was going to post it here and see if anyone could identify it.  that was over 2 months ago...
