do i need more than one coin slot/button?

i'm setting up a cabinet with a single 4 way stick, 1 action button and two start buttons, so i can play vertical classics on it.  i have an old 4 button gamepad here that i hacked a while back that i was hoping to use.  the D pad takes care of the joystick, but with 2 start and 1 action button, that only leaves one input available for coins.  is one coin input enough for these old classics?  i know certain games requre that you use coin slot 2 for player 2, but as far as i know, those are only for 2 (or more) player simultaneous games.  are there any good 4 way, vertical, 1 button or less games that will require that i have a second coin slot?

i have a 2 player x-arcade interface that i could use, but i have other plans for it if i dont have to use it.

any thoughts?

Could use shifted buttons if you ever run into a game that needs the other coin button.  I'm working on a Mame mod for generic shift/modifier buttons. . hopefully I'll be done soon.

I did think MAME would support multiple keys for just this sort of thing, such as pressing A+B together would trigger Start 1. It does, but it also triggers whatever other keys A or B just happen to be bound to.

Then I remembered that GGG and Ultimarc products shift functions are hardware based, not software. So that got rid of that idea. I guess if you modify and recompile MAME, you would get the functionality you want. Otherwise.... :dunno

i think you're fine, if all you have is one joystick then you wont be playing any games that require more then 1 coin slot.. even games that supported more then one usually have a setting for a single "Totalizing" coin mech.

there maybe 1 or 2 games that are odd ball but i dont think you'll have a problem with going with just 1.
Anyone got change for a dollar?

Yeah, I think you should be ok with one coin slot too :) The only old games that used different slots were ones that took different coins (Defender had a 3rd slot in the middle that usually took Susan B. Anthony dollars, presumably giving 4 or 5 credits). I also remember seeing some older pinball machines with one slot that took dimes (for 1 credit) or quarters (for 3 credits) This of course, wouldn't be an issue with a MAME cab.
