Choosing a cabinet type
« on: August 19, 2009, 11:10:09 am »
Hey guys, I joined this site years ago, and have been collecting parts for what seems like forever.  I'm finally at the point now where I moved to a house with a garage and I can finally get started.

I have the tools and wood, but the first decision I have to make is the cabinet design.   What do most folks recommend, do you make your own shape, model one after a classic, or use the one from saints book which I did buy.

I'm probably joe average with my expectations and needs, just a nice looking cab that can handle a medium size panel.  Any recommendations or suggestions?  Has there been a nice repository of designs made up or anything since Ive been out of the scene for awhile?

Any suggestions appreciated.

There is no right answer.  The LuSiD/Project Arcade design is great but some people don't like the overhanging CP.  I guess if I were totally starting from scratch I'd just make an exact copy of ARTIFACT's cabinet - the thing is sick.

If you're building a 2-player upright as most do, your main two styles will be an enclosed, generic JAMMA-style cabinet with one-piece sides and a control panel contained within those dimensions, or an 'American style' as I like to call it - a larger cabinet with an oversized control panel to allow more playing space and controls. You can of course build a slim cabinet or go with something Candy-cab style or completely unique, but one of these basic shapes will be best for your first build and will depend heavily on your space and budgetary limitations. A nice big cab is great and can be tailored for your size, but remember you will need stronger fixings, more space and more money to fill that control panel and monitor space up properly...

Ya i knwo this is highly individual, so it's tough.  I have a 27" tv with svid in that will be the monitor.  So i guess having that dictates the internal width.   Do you think it's better to build a cp first, then the cab for it, or the other way around?  Maybe I should just browse KLOV until I see a design I like, and try to redo it.

With a TV that size you will need a bigger cabinet, so the 'enclosed' design will not look good. Stick with an American 'Midway' style.
