use the following switch:

-r 800x600

However, I'd probably recommend a lower resolution for safety's sake:

-r 640x480

It's not like the games were even that high, anyways...

Also, in case you may be using mame.ini you can just put the resolution in that - don't forget to change vector.ini to 800x600 if you have that file too.

Thanks for posting, had the same problem/question.  Am using Mame32 at the moment and found that 3 settings seem to effect this, turning hardware stretch on/off is the biggee, the zoom control (1x vs. 2x) and turning 3d direct draw off worked on one game.  But, pain to do that to load individual games!

I've download commandline mame and a front end to play with.   do you have to change just one ".ini" file with the -r switch?  or do you have to change a file for each individual rom?

thanks,

also, meant to ask, would using an ArcadeVGA card from Ultimarc solve this problem?

thanks,

I believe MAME32 uses a mame.cfg file.  I don't really remember it too well, since I use the command line version.  Upgrade to it and things are much more flexible :)

The nice thing about the avga is that it's very very easy to setup to get all(ok all but like 5) the correct resolutions for each game.  There is a nice utility available on ultimarc.com that creates an .ini file for each game in mame.   Each .ini file has the correct resolution listed for the game.  Mame looks at that right before it launches it to set the right resolution.  Only downside is I had to change all vector games to 800x600 by hand.  Oh and this setup may only work with command line mame, but I'm not sure on that.

Look through the monitor section, AVGA/d9200 combo has been discussed A LOT.  I think it's worth it myself, tho YMMV.
