Robotron on the XBOX 360 - Best Joysticks !
« on: August 15, 2009, 10:22:15 pm »
Anyone know if there is a decent USB joystick setup that you could play Robotron with for the 360 ?

Any ideas without building something ?

Thanks

I was going to suggest that if you don't want to build something, then just get one of these:

X-Arcade™ Dual

But then I read this on their site:

Quote
Update On X-Arcade™ Xbox 360™ Adapter Availability.

Although the X-Arcade™ is one of the most highly-regarded Arcade Joysticks available, we have been unable to produce an Xbox 360™ adapter. Microsoft® is legally blocking Xgaming from producing, manufacturing or distributing a peripheral which connects directly to the Xbox 360™.

It is unfortunate that Microsoft's® policies are depriving Xbox 360™ owners of a peripheral which is available for nearly every other game system produced in the past decade and customer grief has only amplified with the recent release of Street Fighter IV.

Our customers have inquired whether Xgaming could simply pay a royalty to Microsoft® and unfortunately it's not that easy. The Xbox 360™ was designed with a security function which prohibits third-party development without approval and Microsoft® has refused to grant any rights to Xgaming.

This strategy has allowed Microsoft® to control the supply of all accessories produced for their console and only a small handful of manufacturers have been granted permission by Microsoft® .

"Beside the royalty, which will restrict many small companies from making Xbox 360 peripherals, this security feature also gives Microsoft total control over which peripherals are manufactured so if for instance they don’t want mouse and keyboard adapters for the Xbox 360, they can simply decide not to allow them, even if a company wants to pay the royalty. "

Teamxbox "{Source Teamxbox}

It serves Xgaming no benefit to delay the release of our adapter and we are paralyzed without Microsoft's® explicit permission.

We sincerely apologize--but we are working hard to provide customers with X-Arcade™ support on their 360's™. Other firms are hacking together electronics from Microsoft® gamepads and we feel such a solution will not meet our strict quality standards.

However, we can assure customers that we will have a legal option available by the end of this year. We hope you'll be patient and if you sign up below---we will email you upon any updates on availability.

We are unable to provide any additional information at this time, but do apprecaite your patience and hope you realize we must adhere to legal requirements established by Microsoft.®

Regards,

Shawn Walters
President
Xgaming, Inc.

Wow, that's awesome. Rock on Microsoft.

You could probably get someone smaller to build you something, or someone on this forum.

Looks like they use a DB25 for output. . you could get one of those and hack a 360 controller yourself maybe.

I meant a smaller company.  The larger companies aren't typically going to hack 360 controllers for you, and getting a license from Microsoft for this sort of thing isn't likely.

Thanks for the input guys... I can build a panel and hack a 360 controller no problem.... I even have an original complete robotron CP here with original Joys :) (Thats for a cabinet I will build some day lol)

I have built hundreds of panels over the years, when I used to convert Williams cabinets 20 years back to double Jamma, (when I was 22)

If I had only know then, all these Cab's and Star wars originals would still be with me now lol....

I just thought someone would have come up with a commercial controller by now (A small one etc)

But I see the Microsoft problem would still excist etc

Thanks again

maxmix

PS The best 2 I did keep and still have is my original Disks of Tron and my Twilight Zone Pin :)

I dont think there will be many DOT's left now in the UK (Scotland)

I know. Actually, when I first read it, having skipped a bunch above it, I did think small people. Posting on it was pure humor, though.

Is it an EDOT?

Without building something? Isn't that against what this forum is about? I mean, it's called "Build Your Own Arcade"...

If you were to go the hacking route, you could wire the second controller to the button inputs since Robotron on the 360 has the ability to use the buttons for shooting.  Best thing I can think of, without having to figure out how to hack the analogs. Though, an analog hack would be supreme! Access to all the new shooters would be tight!

Just tried Robotron on my 360 to see how it is. I have younger friends a work that gave never played it! I wanted to see if it is worth recommending to them or get them to play over here.

I can see why you want arcade sticks to play it. It is probably fine on the 360 controller once you get used to it.

Doesn't hold up well with bilinear filtering and a modern plasma tv though.
