MK II Control Panel Joy/Button Placement
« on: August 14, 2009, 06:05:07 am »
Hi Guys, sorry if this is a really lame post but, does anyone have the control panel joystick/buttons layout for Midways Mortal Kombat II machine or Killer Instinct?

I have an unfinished machine, basically as I cannot decide on what Artwork theme to go with but, would like to get my panel drilled for joysticks etc. It would be good to see where they are placed and spaced apart for reference as I presume they had a positioning most would be happy with. Mainly the Joystick positioning for P1 & P2 on the panel if anything.

Thanks in advance

I have the MK control panel art in vector format. I also have the MK marquee in vector and collected various other MK arwork such as the johnny cage sideart for MKI and character cards (w/ special move instructions). I am currently restoring several cabs using MK at, including an original MKI with Johnny Cage.

In my experience, you are better waiting until you have the artwork printed (at least a low-quality dummy-run) before cutting holes.

I can email these fairly large files to you.

i agree...figure out your artwork first, then use it as a template for drilling your holes...it is much easier to make the holes match the artwork than it is to make the artwork match the holes

youre going to really limit the number of games you can play with a MK layout, and Im an MK nutcase.

go with the SF/KI layout n matter what art you go with. you might need to edit the MK art to fit the button pattern

+1

MK uses a very non standard layout that wouldn't work well for most games.

most peopl end up going with teh 6 button street fighter layout, or a modification of that

Thanks for the replies and the concern regarding the artwork guys. It's mainly for the joy placement primarily on the panel as I will be using a 7 button curved layout along side it. It's working out how the original MK is placed as I have no reference of measurements at the moment to guide me. Is it central and how far in from the edges etc

Just to mention the artwork, I won't be using placement graphics around the button holes. I've based my theme ideas around two divides of the main panel and player start buttons at the top so it doesn't limit me as such.

Zebidee, thanks for the great offer, that's extremely helpful. I will drop you an email if that's ok.

i have an actual MK control panel sitting in my basement collecting dust.  my brother saved it from the dumpster when he used to work at a vending company.  the corners are a little banged up, but i'm sure i could get some measurements for you

my MKII machine isnt here nor is my KI1, but my KI2 says the player 1 stick is 5 inches from the left edge of the CP, and 7 inches up from the bottom. The Player 2 stick is 10 inches from the right edge and 7 inches up from the bottom.

If someone else wants the file, here is the link (for as long as it remains):

https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=MnFqQ1Z0R0ZoeVkwTVE9PQ

Note however that you might want to play with the dimensions a little to suit your particular setup, before drilling holes.

Thanks  for the measurements Malenko. That's quite interesting when viewed on the CPO as I think this is why I have been perplexed about the placings for mine. If you were to have asked me initially I would have said split the panel into two sections , P1 & P2, and then measure in from the left and then duplicated the placings layout to match on the right player 2 side guided from the middle. I hope that makes sense  :lol  They are actually offset to the right, which does make sense thinking about it now, so that the view for both players is near central for the screen.

I wonder, do most people when designing their panel use a split and duplicate equal method as I would have or is it good practice to take their offsets as being the standard?

Thanks Zebidee, have just downloaded the file so will load that up later on my other computer to have a good look.

I've posted up the test layout of my CPO. I used part of the design from one that was posted a while back on here, I will credit it when I'm back in front of my other computer. As I said I am undecided as yet what theme to go with hence the hold up on finishing my machine  :timebomb: :lol . White placings for buttons and black to show the P1 & P1 coin and start. Any criticism or tips would be greatly appreciated....as I am a first timer

a good rule is Measure how far your p1 joystick is from the left edge.  (for ex 5")then from the left edge to teh right-most button (11")    then reverse that for player 2.  your right most button should be 5" in from the right edge, which if you keep spacing the same, should put your p2 joystick 11" in from the right edge.

measuring from the middle will not give you a symetrical panel

Well, I completed the MK-style cab that I have been doing, which includes a modified version of the MK artwork I posted earlier. I resized it and cleaned up the background dots & colours a bit to give it a cleaner look (although this is slightly less original, I and my graphic designer agree that it looks better).

I am sorry for pimping my wares, but this baby is currently for sale. Let me know if you are interested!

Location=Canberra, Australia.  Click on any picture to go to the ebay link.

I've uploaded the MK panel art again, but this is limited to 7 days or 100 downloads so get in quick.

If you want it after that, then perhaps you can find a better place than "yousendit.com" for me to upload the file.

rapidshare.com
megaupload.com
netload.in
hotfile.com

those are some of the best ones..

i personally like megaupload.com and netload.in the best.

btw i dont know if anyone has a copy of it.. but apparently there was a version of the overlay for converting cabs running street fighter 2.. i actually played on one once that had been converted it had 2 blocks and the overlay was different then the dedicated machines.
Anyone got change for a dollar?
