Industry standard controls for shmups in japan?
« on: August 09, 2009, 01:05:56 am »
evening folks. new to BYOAC here. been really getting into shmups and such lately, and have been looking into building myself a set of arcade controls. ive been trying to find out what is considered the "standard" components and buttons layout is for candy cabs with shmups in em. it seems to be seimitsu, but i may be wrong. also, what do you folks recommend for a responsive and easy to hack dreamcast controller? i want to actually play DUX and ikaruga with an arcade stick instead of the crummy Dpad on most dreamcast controllers.

TIA, simon.

for me only JLW 5,5mm throw
next good is LS32 and 7mm
LS40/56 - 7,5
other sux

now shmups on type X use vewlix cab and only JLF

but true is all jap stick sux for shmups only suzo STC/Universal inductive, iL magnetick joystick, Coin Control Competion Pro.

LS56 is easy to mod DC and this stick has correct shaft height

I did not write that HAPP is better:P
this question is stupid because standard for shmups does not exist on jap, euro and USA - never.
in japan shmups programmer does not decide about joystick. it is only firms connections.
in 90' SEGA, SNK, Capcom, Namco have deal with seimitsu and get flagship model Seimitsu
Taito now use only sanwa, and now SNK and Capcom use cab Taito and get Sanwa. they want or they do not want - still get flagship model Sanwa witch Vewlix cab you get JLF on SF4 and Raiden4.

I'm using Suzo inductives in my vert cab. They are incredible sticks, but out of production and very difficult to find now.

I actually think it'd be down to two choices for me now. For a switched stick I'd go with the Sanwa JLW. I like the light and crisp feel of the stick. The Ultimarc U360 would be my other choice, especially if you don't want the feel of a switched stick.

yeah sorry, previous post edited... posted late at night haha.

anyway, so i guess i should re-assess my question. im looking for a stick thats got a relatively short throw. i REALLY like the japanese sticks over suzo or happ (even though ive used a jp stick and a suzo only once each.) i hate happ sticks....

but my point is, not so much what is the standard, but what is most common. i think im just going to end up with a seimitsu LS-32 stick and PS-14-GN pushbuttons all layed out in a hori style button pattern.  bear in mind, this is the first stick ill have ever built. so...bear with me.

I used Seimitsu LS-32 on my panel, They're awesome for shooters and very frustrating for anything else, very hard to hit proper diagonals with them. Problem with diagonals becomes most apparent in Robotron 2048.

if you know, why you ask? :lol
if you need good stick jap for shmups buy JLW but assembly on DC is difficult you need cut old ABS mountingplate how on LS-32 mod for correct shaft height
http://www.kowal.itcom.pl/ArcadeParts_pliki/modDC.htm
if you do not want anything to destroy most easily to install is only LS56

stock have square restrictors you can hit diagonals every time it is 100% accuracy.
sux in robotron because rotation is not smooth but LS-32 have very clear diagonals. these are two different things.
