I was checking Craiglist and I came across this ad...

I emailed the guy and this is what all transpired....

(ME) : Hey, saw your ad on Craiglist…can you describe more? Are these broken cabs or what? I saw where you said “Great for Mame” ..I know me and a couple of friends might be interested…

(Seller) : Hello,
These are totally empty cabinets. Stripped out. No monitors, etc. I have one coctail cabinet and the rest are uprights. Thanks.

(ME): How much are you asking for them? I can spread the word around…I know a friend who might get one …plus I thought about getting an empty  for my next Mame project

(Seller) : Hello,
 The one cocktail cabinet I have is $200 complete with the monitor.No PCB. The arcade uprigjhts start at $150.

WTF!

At first I thought, Did I confuse him? Is this guy for real? I did say broken? He did say stripped?

hahah Sorry if I seem "Hyped-up"..too much coffee this morning...
But on a serious note...What is the average price of empty cabs?...I've seen empty cabs sell for about 20 bucks...Common sense tells me something wrong when i can buy a working MK3 for 300 and then see an empty cab for 150 and up?

Depending on what was originally in it, free to $100, or maybe a little more for an A list cabinet in great shape.  Usually $25-50 for a generic empty to someone walking in off the street.

Level of "gutted-ness" and overall condition of the cab/art determine general value. Above all though, this one fact holds true above all others:

Value is in the eye of the beholder.

True.  When an OP says empty, though, figure they won't even leave any air in there.  They strip them like every bit of plastic or copper is worth a dollar.

i picked up an "stripped" cabinet from an op a few years ago for $20.  generic midway cabinet converted to golden tee 2.  it had a dead monitor with bad screen burn in, he took the boards out of it.  still came with marquee light and golden tee marquee, metal control panel with 3 buttons, and coin door with 2 good mechs.  once i got it home, i found a 3" trackball lying in the bottom of it...it needed a little work, but i got it working.  it was a good deal.

i'd go look at them..like someone said, if it is a rare cabinet in good shape, then it may be worth that much

The thing is...I dont think the seller even knows what type cabs he has...He located about 1.5-2 hours away...and I dont think I would travel that far just to look...From what he told me he only has one cocktail and several uprights...Instinct telling me not to....

Yep, I agree. He probably would have let them go for less, but as soon as you showed serious interest, the price went up.

Walk away. There will be more. Or, he'll see the error in his ways and come down to a reasonable price.

I got my empty for free. I bought a Double Dragon cab for $250, and he threw in the empty for nothing. Rolling Thunder cab w/ no monitor, no buttons, joystick, boards, locks or power supply. Present were the bezel, marquee, control panel & coin doors & working mechs.

I'm in the middle of converting it now.

Yeap ..after saying that, I thought i did "put my foot in my mouth"...Werid thing though later that day...i found the guy's website...and man his stuff is over priced....Aw well better luck next time i guess...

So call him back and say you are looking for ten and will pay $30 each.  He'll find them for you.

What likely did him in is that he did not say "I would like to buy them on <date> and will be there with a truck and cash in hand."  An op views anyone who isn't standing there with cash as a time waster.  Be there with truck and cash and you'll get what you want at a good price.  Cash speaks.  Phone calls don't.
