Leaf buttons too short
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:46:25 am »
Hey guys, I tried to test mount my leaf buttons today and they were too short. I thought that long leaf buttons and the flat holders were for 3/4" thick CPs? I'm pretty sure I have long buttons, do I have the wrong type of button holder?

Edit: I just found this thread and I guess those black holders are what I need?

Can you use a router to recess out where the mechanism sits?
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

It would be easier to get shorter leaf switch holders, but you could modify the ones you have too.  If you cut off 1/4" (guessing from the looks of things) and drill new holes for the switch screws, you could use the ones you have (I'd probably drill then cut to make sure the holes were in the correct location).  If you have a ton of buttons with this problem, you'd have to consider if your time is worth more than the money you save by modding what you have.

I had long buttons, and needed to rout out my CP where the button holders went.

I do have a router, so I could route out a recess. I would like to minimize effort if possible though, does anyone know where to get the shorter leaf switch holders?

Check out this link

In the first pic is shows the leaf mounted with no holders used might that work ?

If you wanted to go this route and they were too short now get a measure for the needed space and trim some plastic or maybe even rubber to make some washers. Craft stores  and wal mart used to sell plastic looked like rulers with no numbers its easy to work with. Oh and the the washers would go under the leaf to raise it just a bit.

Where did you get those holders ?

The difference looks to be in that little extra section, which adds to the mounting position of the switch itself. (that thing is way tall)

I ran into the same problem testing my leafs.  When I went back and re-read some of the posts more carefully I did see that others had routed out the bottom of the CP so the long leaf buttons would fit. I did not catch that the first time.

Kevin, I got the buttons and holders from Bob Roberts. I agree about that extra section. And to see if it was just sandwiched in, I took the screws out. No luck, it's molded like that.

wp34, well I posted a while back before I bought them and people said I would have to route. However, then I found some other threads that contradicted that. Guess I just assumed the people in my thread were buying the wrong ones. Now I think there's 3 types of holders, metal, 1/2" wood, and 3/4" wood.

Here's some threads with people that didn't have to route using 3/4":

Can anyone point me to a vendor that has those black holders?
