USB Speakers
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:11:15 pm »
Hey Guys got a question....

Friend of mine gave me a set of computer speakers that powers up via USB. I was thinking of maybe tying them in to my cab to hopefully add some more "umph"... there are two cords (1. input jack. 2. USB cord)...I am wanting to see if i can fix it where they wont draw power from the PC. Correct me if I am wrong...but if it get power from USB ...isnt that 5v for juice? I have an old wall charger to a cell phone...I belive that it sends 5 v to charge the battery in the cell phone. Can i splice it in to the usb and have it plugged in the wall socket for power? the speakers are here...

and the phone charger is ...

Would just like to add that I just recently got some usb powered speakers from Amazon, and I'm really happy with them. I wasn't expecting much, but they do sound really decent for what they are.

Yeah I was impressed also...couldnt belive that 2"speakers would produce good sound...With them, i have them along side my 2.1 speakers...and the USB speakers have more of a twitter-mid-range quality...I placed them behind my monitor...and my wife has been telling me "turn it down!" alot more often...Only downside I can tell is that I have to set them at a certain volume...since i cant control both volume settings per system....

Hey Doc...where can you get the USB wall do-mick-ey?

It's 5v but almost no amps.   Amps are what drive a speaker.  And be careful if you push them about burning out your USB controller - most of them really aren't made to push current heavy devices, just data.  Sure, they can do it, but if you've got a cheap on board controller the question is how long will it last.

Decent powered PC speakers are easy to get free.

Thanks for the link vertygo.  They look like they would be a breeze to mount in a cab, even a small bartop.
