options for a Namco/Midway-style cocktail cabinet?

Let's assume for a moment that I build a MAME cabinet based on something like this:
http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=CABMWCT
Most of the components, I have a pretty good idea about. But for audio I really don't know. I see that it comes with a 6x9 speaker hole. What if want "okay" mono sound similar to an original coin-op machine? What if I want better sound quality, what are my options? I'm just not sure what would be the right way to approach this.
I don't have a cabinet yet. Building one from a kit and cutting my own speaker hole (or holes) is also an option. I'm pretty sure I don't want to put in a powered subwoofer, but anything short of that is open for consideration.

You have to decide mono or stereo first off.
You will already have stereo output from the PC if you decide to go that route.
Either way you will need a small single (mono) or dual (stereo) channel amp to drive the speaker as the PC alone will not drive anything remotely close to a 6X9 worth a hoot.

Right, I should have mentioned that. . . My only interest is in playing the real oldies, so very few of them produce stereo sound. The only one with stereo that I can think of that I'd be likely to run is Gyruss, and that's no big deal really.
