Is there a test board ***update*** found one!
« on: July 16, 2009, 02:39:24 pm »
In windows you can bring up a keyboard or a controller and press the button and it will show on the screen what it thinks that button is.

When it comes to arcade games is there anything similar?

Just thinking of a way to try and map out an unknown layout without a wiring diagram.

LOL   :laugh2:

Its not that bad!

Really I was just wondering if there was like a test board you could plug in that would show like a test pattern for the monitor for pinch and the likes and maybe show what signal is coming in on what button and if the coin mechs are working.

Like a Jamma test board or likes.

Im sure someone all these years has probably come up with something like that

first thing to do is figure out the pinout of the board you are trying to find out the controls for.

next thing would be to follow the wires from that board to each button, and you have your answer.

otherwise you will have to trace each wire from each button and figure out where it goes.

if somebody has already taken it apart and messed with it or worse, cut the harness, you could take a multimeter and set it to ohms and ohm out the wires one by one.

let me update this what i mean by using a mm is when someone has cut and spliced wires using different colors and such and you cant really tell whats what from your cp to the end of the wire anymore. in other words its a mess. but if wires are still cut and havent been spliced back somewhere, you wont get a sound out of it.

glad you asked, i had a program that did this years ago.. but i dunno what i did with it and dont remember the name.

so i went looking and found this http://www.brothersoft.com/keyboard-199795.html
very small, and this looks to be nicer then the one i had years ago..

writen by a guy named jason hood, http://www.geocities.com/jadoxa

his website is on geocities which is getting shut down in a few months.
looks like he has a lot of cool software but i did'nt see his keyboard program for down there for some reason.

it runs fine in winxp, i believe it's dos compatible, but i have'nt tried it out.

i've attached a copy here for convenience.

my anti virus (norton june 21st definitions) says it's clean.. but you might wanna run it as a low level user just in case.

for controllers you can go to the control panel (windows), and select gaming controllers, you'll see a list of controllers open the one you want to test by double clicking on it, you'll see all buttons and axis for it, can't test rumble feature this way but i doubt you care about that.
Anyone got change for a dollar?

I use Darkstalkers for mine.  It tests 2 coins, sticks, 6 buttons, p1/2, and menu and test.

Now that sounds like something I could use do you know of any others like that but use a standard jamma vs the cps2?

Sounds like we are getting closer

are you downloading from that site i posted? the first place is where i got my copy.
i also attached a copy to my post so try that one if you can't get that site to work.

btw the author emailed me back and confirmed it was his, apparently you have to go into the "misc" section to get it which is why i did'nt see it on his own site.

also he's already moved to a new site: http://adoxa.110mb.com/
same as the geocites atm, but yahoo is shutting it down in a few months.

tons of games have switch tests built in, from Mortal Kombat II to Street Fighter

the list would be far too long.  load up games in mame and hit the test menu button and see if theres a switch test.
pretty much any game made in the last few years has one. CPS2 is just JAMMA but with a kick harness for the extra buttons

That's a neat board but I can't see myself shelling out $50 for something that I can do in most games.  If I was testing actual cabs this would be pretty useful but if you've got a mame box I can't see the use of this.

(Going to order one shortly though)
