Went to Kennywood park today, awesome arcade
« on: July 15, 2009, 11:07:14 pm »
I went to Kennywood park today, which is near Pittsburgh, PA.  it was about a 2 hour drive for us, but it was pretty awesome.  the rides were great and the weather was perfect.  before we left, we stopped at the arcade, where i was very surprised....this was by far the best arcade i had ever been to...they had skeeball and redemtion games, some newer arcade games, like guitar hero arcade, deal or no deal, and some other driving games and things, but what was awesome was the classic games that they had. I didnt have my cell phone with me to take pics, my wife took some, but i don't have the data cable for her phone.  she took some pics, but they didn't all come out.

here are the ones i remember:

PacMan
Ms Pacman
Donkey Kong
Dig Dug
Frogger
Defender
Space Invaders
Moon Patrol
TMNT
X-Men 6 player (it is HUGE)
operation wolf
virtua fighter
Popeye
Simpsons

plus a few light guns games that i don't remember. best of all, they were all only $.25 to play.  not all of them were in great shape, but they were all playable.  i even managed to set the high score on donkey kong, at 122,700...which even beats out my mame hiscore.  i was pretty proud of that, especially since the joystick in the cabinet wasnt even 4way restricted.  my first game i only got about 16,000 or so, but my second game was pretty good.  my wife to a pic of the high score table with her cell phone, if i can get it on my PC, i'll post it.  i was pretty happy with that score and it was a great way to finish off the day at the park.

if any of you are in the Pittsburgh area, i highly recommend going to kennywood.  the rides are awesome, and the arcade is the best i have seen in forever.

you're right about that xmen 6p, how they ever got the bosses ok to build such a cabinet i'll never know..

arcade i sue to hang out at had one iir it's about twice as wide as a normal game, and had 2 monitors.. iirc it used mirror to try and make the display look like one piece, still had a line in the middle though.

awsome if you can get 6 people on it at once though, has anyone made a 6 player mame cabinet? i dont know of any other games that had more then 4..
Anyone got change for a dollar?
PLEASE HELP NEED Fastmame .70 and .9* releases

I hope you don't mind, but I added your list of games to the arcade finder site http://www.aurcade.com If you think of any more games there, feel free to post here and I'll add them to the list. Thanks!

cool.  i knew there was an database like that somewhere, but i couldn't remember where.

that was the first time i had seen most of those games in real cabinets....space invaders is really awesome on a real cabinet.  i love how the invaders and such seem to float above the backdrop like that..you just cannot replicated that in mame....also, i always played it with a joystick, it was alot of fun using buttons to move left and right.

on a side note, how do they get that apperance on space invaders?  I am assuming that there is a semi transparent overlay on the mirror..is that right?

I think so. If you looked inside the machine, you can see the monitor below you, with the image reversed (the mirror corrects it). I think the backdrop is seethru and sits between them, but I'm not 100% sure. I've always preferred buttons for Space Invaders. There are a few versions that did use joysticks, I believe Taito's did, and the Midway cocktails used those lever type joysticks similar to the ones used on Galaxian cocktails.

No way!!!  You work on the skycoaster? I just started working this summer most days at the Kangroo. I still don't know many people but if you've been there for 12 yrs, we should take a break togather some time.

I also live about two hours away from Kennywood and try to get there once each summer. I don't know if ill make it this year, but I will keep you guys (and the skycoaster hehe) in mind if I go :)

When I go, I always try to hit the arcade for a bit, as Dave and Busters at the Waterfront is the only arcade around that I know of anymore.

Pretty cool. The best I saw recently was a spotless Space Invaders.
