Power options for PC & Monitor
« on: July 13, 2009, 11:35:25 pm »
My 13 yr old son is working on his first Mame cabinet.  We were pondering the best way to be able to power up the pc (and monitor) from outside the cab.  I was wondering what solutions people have come up with?  I had thought of running a switch off the Mo-Bo's power swich connectors to someplace outside the cabinet, but then how to also switch on the monitor?  We are probably using a flat panel which typically has to have the power button pressed everytime the power is disrupted and restored.  Ideally I'd prefer to put a power box inside the cabinet that all my electrical items plug into (PC, Monitor, Marquee Light and speakers) so that I can energize everything with one simple switch.  Any ideas?

For a cocktail project I am working on, I bought this "Clever Power SPS-500" power supply that has a built in power strip; kills two birds with one stone. All the AC outlets are powered on when the PC power is switched on. Review: http://is.gd/1y1Sf

The SmartStrip power strips are another popular option for doing this; and there is a Craftsman version as well.

i use a craftsman autoswitch, and wired a pushbutton to the pc motherboard for the power button.  when the pc is turned on, the smart powerstrip turns everything else on that is plugged into it.   unless you turn the monitor off with the button, most will come back on when power is restored.

here is the powerstrip i used
