Questions: Admin Buttons on a Control Panel
« on: July 06, 2009, 11:37:25 pm »
Can some name the most popular admin functions.

I was going to put three buttons on on each side of a joystick for classic(before '89) games for a friend but want to make sure all bases are covered by having enough buttons across the top of the cp.

(A pointer to a list of NEO GEO games would be great too, just to make sure I don't need four on each side of the joystick).

Thanks.

the only admin buttons on my panel are Pause, and Exit.  any other admin fuctions are handled by shifted commands.

as for the neogeo games, go to MAWS and do a deluxe search.  select the driver as neodrvr.c and do a search, it will show you all of the neogeo games.

if you are a big neogeo fan, then you may want to include a 4th button.

Well unless that site allows me to search for 4-button games only it is useless to me.

Thanks.

If you took 3 seconds to check you would know there are 233 of them.

yeah, look around a little. you can specify the neodrvr as the driver, and the number of buttons as 4.  I should have said that, i just figured it would be obvious once you saw the page

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Pause/Select (for consoles) and Exit on the panel, everything else is hidden or shifted

the MAME coin button makes a good select button for console emulators. (unless of course you only have coin slots and no buttons, which makes it a little weird)

I have a coin door, so I don't need coin buttons. Mine has a button next to each player start that is pause in MAME and select for consoles.

ive got 5 admin buttons on my control panel and as i see it thats all i need up there.

P1 + P2 coin buttons and also a hidden switch to turn them off if i want a coin only match or two,

A pause button, And also an Enter Button and an Escape Button to select or exit games.

everything else is disabled.

also after looking at keyboard drawers and such and hidden admin buttons and such, i finally decided the best thing was a wireless desktop. for any serious admin, i wanted a keyboard and mouse.

basically for admin i just plop the keyboard down on the control panel and go to work. for all other things, i dont need it.

Ok, the link you posted was a search page. So I thought that was the page I was supposed to use.

Thanks.

I have one coin button on my panel, for convenience's sake. Anything else, I have a keyboard drawer built into my CP; I just pull out the drawer and get to it. I'm about to rebuild my panel, and will probably move the coin button to the side and add one for player 2 as well.

I plan on having nothing extra on the CP itself, just a 6 button 2player layout.

All admin functions are going to be handled by small buttons hidden away on the cab - either on a control plate on the top of the cab (game exit, maybe reset computer), inside the coin door (game admin menu button), or ...somewhere under my lower marquee (using a Omega Race for my cab) (exit game?, coins).

I'm working on the placement of the exit game and coins...I want them totally out of sight and don't want to screw up the lower marquee installing them.

That should cover everything...if I need anything else (pause, FF) I'll put it onto the top control plate.

And also an Enter Button ... to select ... games.

Is this a front end thing?
In mame, I set "UI Select" (which defaults to enter) to "P1B1 Or P2B1".  I'd do the same with the front end if possible.  Remapping is awesome.

My admin buttons are just pause and a shift-like button so it + pause = exit (with a mame remap, not a true shift).  Coin and start, too, if you call them admin buttons.  All other admin I do with a keyboard, and rarely once setup.

The problem is mame (& thus maws) lists all but 3 neogeo games as "4 button" games, even if the game makes use of less.  This is because those three games use different inputs (a trackball, a spinner, and a casino game), than all the other's 8-way joystick + four buttons input wiring.

If the OP wanted to check if any the the neogeo gams he plans to play really makes use of all 4 buttons.  Since mame (& thus maws) is reporting the numbers buttons physically wired, the maws list is not the best answer.  the KOF and AOF series and other in the fighter/versus category use 4 buttons, not sure if any other neogeo games did.  Anyone?

Hey if you want something cool, get one of those remote control universal setups. im talking about the ones that come with a remote and a passive switch control pcb that doesnt send any voltage but simply closes two wires together. they use them a lot in budget remote control retrofits for cars, without a security system.

basically what you can do is power up this pcb with 12V, then hook up some wires to your Ipac for the admin buttons. that way you have a small remote in your pocket and no dummy can watch you and try to copy you by putting their hand on top of the cabinet where youve got your admin buttons hid.

my cabinet is at my house, wich is also a business, and we have customers who come over and their kids and them want to play some games, all the time. this is definately a big concern for me. No admin buttons on the outside at all, ever.

I'm still building my cab, but the reply I found most often in my searching was this:

Exit/Escape and Pause.  That's it.

Player Start & Coin aren't considered "admin" buttons by some people, but you obviously need those as well.  Some people hide Exit and/or pause.  And I've heard some people hide other buttons (like in the back of the CP box or in the coin door).

I'm planning to go with the Start & Coin buttons, plus Pause & Exit on the CP top.  If I need any other controls after testing, I bought 2 spare buttons to place hidden in the back.

Hope that helps.

I have an exit and a pause.  A dedicated exit key was important to me from experience: the first time I played a two player game that used a shift combination, the game exited when both of us needed to put in a credit and hit P1 & P2 at the same time.  That was frustrating enough for me to realize that exit had to be its own button, out of the way of everything else...
