Any Ultimarc Magstik Plus in Sweden?
« on: July 02, 2009, 05:01:04 am »
Hello.
I'll post this in English so Homeland Security can follow....  ;D

I've heard about the short movement of the Magstik Plus and like to try them out before I buy them.
Do we have any Swedes here who own Magstik Plus joystick that I could have a look at?

Just post here or PM me what city you live in if you can help me out..
I think Stockholm to Örebro area is about as far as I'm willing to travel..  ;D

Cheers!

I'm afraid I'm in England so can't help you out in that way, but I can confirm the Mag-Sticks do have a very short throw, which I actually prefer to long-throw sticks as most cabinets I played growing up had Suzo 500's, which also have a short, precise throw. I find short-throw sticks much more precise, harder-wearing and easier to use over a long time as you can execute quicker movements. They don't feel as precise as Suzo's but they are very good, the 4-way is great and the large bat-top handle feels solid.

To bad you're not here in Sweden.
Do they have as short trow as the old "Tac2" had on the C64? I mean reeeeealy short?
Can someone pick up a ruler for me and measure the throw?

---No dirty comments about rulers and taking measurements, Y'all. OK?---

I bought a Mag Stik plus and absolutely hated it because of the short throw. I installed it and in a couple of weeks I found out that I loved it. As mentioned above it is a very precise stick, and for me it gives great control in shootem' up games like Raiden and Viper.

On closer comparison between the mag stick and the old one that had miles of throw I realised that the switches on both joysticks activated at about the same positon of movement as each other, and that the extra movement of my old stick was just a placebo anyway.

And yes, when the stick is set to four way it works great too!

I never have TAC2
but if you like old short throw stick like competion pro http://www.syntaxerror.nu/joysticks.html
you must find old Coin Control stick - very short throw

SUZO STC (system 500) is very similar, Mag stick is still good  equivalent
throw measurements

Mine has aproximately 10 to 11mm total travel when moved in the diagonal, and slightly less when moved from side to side. For reference the total height from the top of the stick to the top of the joystick base is about 75mm.

Thanks for the URL's.

If you by total mean from side to side, from one extreme to the other I start to get worried... :-\
My Tankstick joysticks travel about 30 mm from side to side. Maybe a dedicated 4-way is the way to go?

It's just a matter of preference when it comes to sticks. Go with what you're used to or what was common on games you used to play and you're not taking a gamble.

Yep, measured at the top of the stick it's 11mm total. As I said, when mine turned up I was very disappointed, especially because it had cost so much by the time it got to Australia. And now I love it....who woulda thunk?
