Donkey Kong/Nintendo Cabinet Dimensions
« on: June 24, 2009, 05:06:19 pm »
Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum, not so new to cabinets, but I had some questions that I'm hoping someone can answer.

I'm currently trying to convert Jakobud's dimensions for cabinets into CadKey/KeyCreator and I'm having a few issues.
There so far isn't a problem with the dimensions, everything is working out really well, just a few snags.
I'm hoping someone with a real cab can help with these.

1) Bezel & Marquee and spacing. I'm finding Jakobud's dimesions in this area a little confusing. What parts hold the marquee? What holds the bezel?
In the side view, the marquee height dimension is missing, so I'm going by the front view, which has a height of 5.2 inches.
According to MameMarquees.com, the Donkey Kong Jr. marquee is 6.35 inches high.
Which is correct? Could someone provide the dimensions of the marquee, bezel and holders?

2) The Jakobud plans for the Nintendo cabinets have no internal dimensions. The monitor stand, the marquee box, and any other internals.
Would someone be willing to provide these?

You can see by the attached what I've completed so far. Ignore the colours, they'll all be changed once I'm finished. It's just easier for me to work on it when it's different colours. You can probably also see in the picture the spacing I have between the top, marquee and bezel. :P

Thanks for any assistance in advance.

I'll be making all my CAD drawings available once each is finished. Any formats that you guys prefer? KeyCreator can export in many different formats.

1.  The marquee and bezel are held in place by metal retainers - check out Mike's Arcade for the parts.  As for the height discrepancy in the marquee, I'm betting that the 5.2" is the visible area and the 6.35" is the entire marquee meaning about 1/2" is hidden by the retainers which sounds about right to me.

2.  There is a metal bar on the inside which is bolted through the sides which supports the monitor towards the back.  There is also a piece of plywood sloping backwards from the control panel area which has another metal bracket for monitor support as well as a cross piece in the back but I can't imagine either providing much support.  There is a wooden coin box which someone here has provided detailed dimensions on (sorry - I don't have a link) and there is a shelf that holds the board.

I have a DK cab but it was gutted when I got it so I don't know the specific details of how it all went together... HERE are some interior shots of the one I'm restoring and I took a ton of pics if you browse around the blog...

The wood on that cab is in great shape. Good find.

I don't have any dimensions on any of the internal parts. As you can see from the side shot without the side panels, Jakobud wasn't given any of the dimensions of the coin box, the wood that houses the marquee, the piece that holds the monitor, nor that small wooded bit which looks like it holds the PCBs.

Found the Coin Box post but the search ran me into some more trouble. Do Nintendo cabs come standard with casters on the back? If so, what is the size of the plate (the part that is fixed to the bottom) and what are the dimensions of the placement?

What I would like to do with the finished CAD drawings is build reproductions of the old, famous cabs. Not for reselling, but for myself. I have to admit I kind of enjoy the building process more than the restoring process. ;)

I do have one more question to add on now, though. :D
This piece does what exactly? Does it hold onto the bezel from the back of the machine to the back of the bezel? If so, how does it fit together with this part?

Mike's Arcade has been a great help. It's given me much better insight on how the bezel & marquee work together.

Thanks for your help so far!

BTW Javeryh, the wife and I love Bella's Arcade. It's adorable. You did a wonderful job on it.

The biggest problem with CAD is having to be so exact ;)

Thanks for the compliments!

DK cabs come standard with two casters in the back.  When the cabinet is stationary the wheels are off of the ground.  I don't know the exact size though.  Your links aren't working for some reason but I'll guess you are asking about the bottom marquee retainer and the metal bar that runs from front to back.  I do not think they really interact at all... well sort of.  The retainer holds the marquee in place and there is a little bit of metal that hangs down which the top of the bezel will lean up against so it won't fall forward.  The bar that runs from front to back (which is adjustable) holds the bezel in place from behind so it won't fall backwards.  The two pieces never actually touch each other.

I can take a few measurements for you but probably not until 4th of July weekend.  Did you see Neilyboy's DK restoration thread?  It is hands down the best DK restoration I've seen.

I also enjoy building arcade machines as much as playing them.  It is highly rewarding to step back and look at something you built or restored yourself after all the hours that go into it.  Also, the "wow" factor is pretty sweet too - friends and family are amazed at this sort of stuff.

You're welcome for the compliments. You deserve them.

Nice to hear about the casters. I'll have to try and work them in, see if I can get their positioning by eye.

I've fixed the links. Seems I don't require quotation marks around the URL for the BBCode. Oops!

You are correct about the pieces I was referring to, and your description was very helpful. It all makes sense to me now. Doesn't seem like there's a lot holding the bezel on at the top on the back, I'd be worried about people leaning on it.

I've looked at Neilyboy's Restoration. He did an incredible job. I can only hope mine turns out half as good. ;)

July 4th weekend is fine with me. If it's not too much trouble. I don't get that luxury. July 1st (Canada Day) is on a Wednesday, so I get two mini weeks with a mini weekend in the middle.

I've put the coin box in, but I've based it on DonkeyKong's post in which he didn't have the exact measurements either and just guesstimated. I would much rather have exact measurements. Just the perfectionist in me. I'd only need the wooden pieces. The monitor "platform", the back and bottom of the marquee/light  box, the coin box/shelf/drawer/holes in the top, and the shelf near the back which looks to hold the PCBs.

You've already done so much for me and I appreciate it. :notworthy: I hope I'm not being too much of a hassle.

After the Nintendo cab CAD is done, I'll start on Pac-Man and work my way through the other cabs on Jakobud's site. I actually think restoring a Pac-Man would be a better idea for me, but we'll see. I'll CAD it anyways. ;D

Thanks Level42. An excellent forum topic. It's helped with a few pieced I didn't even realise that I needed dimensions on (back door, back vents, back switch/fuse).
I don't know what was in the RapidShare link posted on the second page, though. Rapidshare has since deleted the file due to inactivity.

Does anyone have this file? It might have the few dimensions I'm missing in it. :D If it doesn't have the dimensions, it'll still be a good reference, I'm sure.

Thanks again, Level42 and javeryh.

EDIT:
Taking a cue from the link Level42 posted and using the pictures javeryh has taken, I've outlined the marquee, coinbox and pcb shelf dimensions I'm going to need.
There isn't a clean picture of the two monitor shelves, unfortunately.
