Rotating Games
« on: June 23, 2009, 05:03:32 pm »
I think this is more of a MAME issue but MALA is my front end so here goes:

I have a vertical cabinet, arcade monitor, windows XP. I use pivot pro to rotate my Windows Desktop (iRotate doesn't work likely because of a driver issue but re-installing the ArcadeVGA driver didn't fix it).  Mala rotates to vertical just fine.  Vertical games rotate to my monitor just fine (I have an ini file for each game and I just use Rotate 1 and ROL 1 to get the proper orientation - I also have switchres enabled and the games all have resolutions defined).

For some reason all horizontal games won't rotate to vertical.  If I put Rotate 1 and ROL 1 into the ini file I get nothing.  If I put Rotate 1 and ROR 1 it changes the game to be horizontal on the other side of the screen (more like flip x than ROR action).

In the advanced MAME tab I have tried using all the rotate and flip checkboxes to no effect.  Most of the time if I check the box and click ok when I come back the box will no longer be checked.  Still the checkboxes should just be manipulating the ini files and I am doing that by hand without success.  Specific games I have tested include Mortal Kombat and Rastan.

While I'm here another odd thing happened yesterday to my vertical games.  I start the system, select a game, play a while then shut down.  I come back later and now ALL my vertical games are upside down (so instead of ROL it seems I should have been using ROR but ROL had been working).  I had not tweaked anything between the two playing sessions.

Anyway if anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Craig

I forgot to mention I did have MALA set to rotate MAME (there is a checkbox to enable that) but maybe I unchecked that box in one of my attempts to fix the horizontal issue -- and if so that might explain why the rotation related checkboxes in MALA won't stay selected.  I'll verify that in a few hours when I get home and post anything else I can think of as to what I have tried so far.

Well I got horizontal games to work by letting MAME pick the resolution (turned SWITCHRES off and in some cases turned HWSTRETCH on).  I think I can tweak them to make them look better but at least they work now.

Still no idea what happened to my vertical games settings but I noticed tonight that all the resolutions were backwards for a vert cabinet (the tool I used had a checkbox for vertical and maybe I forgot to check it).  I reset all those by hand (only 40 games) and everything works again.
