Opti-Wiz's for Warlord CP
« on: June 23, 2009, 09:25:01 am »
I want to build a Warlords CP which needs 4 spinners but want to keep the costs down.  What is the cheapest solution, 2 Opti-Wiz's???

Looks like it.  If you want the feature on single board, for ~$10 more you can get one opti-pac.  Or you can try hacking two ball mice, if you can find them now a days.  But the opti-whiz is such a deal now a days that it's hard to beat, even if you get two.

OT, FWIW, FYI, Warlords used four unlimited (aka free spinning) POTs (after the first batch).  However, since it used both unlimited POTs and spinners as inputs, and mame emulates with a dial type input, four spinners is the way to go for mame.  So technically you're building a "Warlords on mame CP", not a "Warlords reproduction-just-like-the-most-common-original CP".  Yeah, easier to say "Warlords CP", but just posting so no one says "you can't do what you're doing because the original used POTs", because you can do it.

Interesting, I didn't know they were unlimited. Thanks for the info!

I was curious to see what kind of game needed four spinners so I loaded it up in MAME. Awesome game! This must have been brilliant in the arcades at the time!

What did the original have?  Limited pots?  They would stop when they hit the limits of where the player could move?

Very very curious.  Is tempting to build a control panel for this. . I wonder if four people could actually play on my tiny control panel space. :)

IIRC, the original had spinners, but it was cheaper to use POTs, so after that POTs were used.  It also looks like even later versions had the normal limited POTs.  So three different inputs as the game matured.

I've never heard that before and see no mention of it in the manuals are you sure you are not talking about a different game? Omega Race?

I had a Warlords Upright CP at one time, but have since sold it.  It had POTs, but I forget what kind.

I might be.  I was pretty sure, but now you got me wondering.  Pong maybe?  Whatever game it was, it was one of the more popular classics.
