Centipede-style versus Pacman-style for two-player?
« on: June 22, 2009, 02:48:54 pm »
I'm contemplating a Pacman style cabinet for a vertical orientation Mame machine.  Does the face that the monitor is angled mean that the cabinet itself would obscure view of the monitor for two players?  I don't have one handy to go look at. :)  Would a Centipede-style cab be better for two-player games?

Thanks!
Gary

personally, i think having the monitor laid back like pacman is just annoying in any situation...having it up more vertically, like centipede would definitely make it easier to see.

+1 - I'm with you there, Gary, but with a twist.

Initially, I was thinking Ms Pac man would make a more iconic impact in the gameroom for 1-player vert games but to build a slim version and use an lcd monitor while keeping the cab's build closer to an original cab. Sacrilegious, I know, but a Centipede has that iconic shape and would work well as the monitor and bezel was in a more vertical, space-saving position to begin with. NOS bezels, marquees, side-art, and CP are available. 19" lcds are not overly expensive these days and the viewing angles wouldn't need to be wide as two people playing have to swap positions anyway.

I was considering the same scratch-built, slim, lcd treatment for a William Multi for horizontal 1-player games and Street Fighter II - World Warrior cab with a wide-screen lcd for 2-player fighters including Street Fighter 4. Three slim cabs would cover a lot of the video game bases and leave a bit more room in a tight area of the basement for pinball machines.

I'm going out of my way to use CRTs so that it looks like it used to! :)

I can appreciate that; I'm restoring a Sega/Gremlin Cocktail cab with the original 19" crt but the novelty ends there: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=92802.0.

Sacrifices must be made if I want at least three cabs as well as pins. A slim Tron would be nice too. Hey, maybe that could be dedicated to spinner games instead of the cramming one onto the Centipede cp.
