Anyone Gaming on an iPhone or iPod Touch?
« on: June 21, 2009, 03:37:01 am »
I'm curious as to how well the gameplay is on these devices seeing how there is no joystick/d-pad or buttons?

I've seen some footage of a few racing games where you tilt/turn the device, but I'm more interested in sports/action games and how well these play?

Peggle and Bejeweled 2 are great but I don't think it would be that fun for a non-puzzle game.

I tried playing Katamari Damacy on my friend's iPhone and I remember just being annoyed with it.

Stuff on my 3G:

Wolfenstein: has a great control scheme.
Let's Golf: very pretty, if simple
Spore:  Sucks
Warfare Inc.  -- strategy game a-la starcraft.  Fun.
Vay -- A sega CD classic.  Tons of fun.
Solebon - A card game suite.  I play this most of all
Sudoku -- Good time waster.

I wonder if EA is going to release Madden for it.  They've released versions of Madden previously for almost all Mobile platforms, but maybe they think the lack of a joystick/d-pad and buttons will hamper gameplay too much to spend their resources on it.

Yes, Madden is on the way.  They mention it in their release notes that come with Tiger Woods.

The platform really isn't that bad for gaming... The touch screen controls seem to be the only drawback, but many of the games are pretty fun.

Games that I have on my iPhone:

iDracula - Interesting Diablo like game with guns
Touchgrind - Finger skateboarding.
MGSTouch - Metal Gear Solid
Space Ace - Yes, the classic Space Ace.  Just like the arcade.
Resident Evil Degeneration - Pretty coool game.  Touchscreen controls are a little hard to get use to at first.
Flight Control - Fun ATC (Air Traffic Control) type game.  Just point the aircraft towards their landing zones.  Quite a bit challenging.
Glyder - Tilt controls.  Pretty fun and cool game.  Very nice looking for a game on a phone.
Flying Aces - Tilt controlled game.  Not bad, but I think Top Gun is better.
Pinball RC by Zen - Rollercoaster Pinball machine.  View changes as you tilt the phone.
Top Gun - Pretty cool game.  Great music.  Tilt controls.
Peggle - It's Peggle on the phone!  Addictive.
Galaga Remix - Pretty cool game.  Controls sortta suck.
Tiger Woods - I just downloaded this. Haven't had a chance to play it yet.  Getting pretty good reviews though.

iPhone is not one of the greatest places to play games.
There's a whole bunch I've tried and just found them so awkward.

Payback - Grand Theft Auto 2 clone (uses accelerometer for movement, SO awkward).
Geo-Defense - Excellent Tower Defense game.
Fieldrunners - Good tower defense game.
Crystal Defenders - (I think that's the name, by SquarEnix) poor tower defense game.
Enigmo - Decent game, difficult, though.
Super Collapse - same as the flash game, but you get to pay for it.
SolitaireCity - Excellent solitaire suite.
De Blob - Very awkward controls (touch or accelerometer)
Dr. Awesome - like Qix only accelerometer driven.
Dungeon Defense - Terrible tower defense game
iDracula - Reminds me of SmashTV.
Lookin' for: Neo-Geo MVS x4 board, memory card reader, memory card, credit LEDs
MVS wants: Metal Slug (any), King of Fighters 2002, Puzzle Bobble (any), Rage of the Dragons, SNK vs Capcom, Magical Drop  (any).

I don't do much more than develop for the platform, but I have a few that I enjoy:
Aurora Feint - This is one of the best puzzle games on the platform IMO, and has been around since the start.
Crazy Pumpkin - simple jack-o-lantern game that my kids love
Pocket God - Surprisingly addictive, think of populus style game focused on how to kill your population in unique and interesting ways.
Geocaching - Not really a game per se, but it's well worth it for the 3G/3GS.  And you like geocaching.
Open Doors - Not a ton of replay value, but it's cool in it's own way.  Fun unique (to me) puzzle game.
Myst - nostalgia is fun.  =)
The Stone of Destiny - kind of a where's waldo with a storyline.  Kind of interesting.
Trace - pretty fun time waster

I've played the NES emulator in the past and it seemed pretty decent, though the lack of tactile feedback can take some getting used to.  That along with the standard console emus needs a jailbroken phone or touch, but the list above should all work both ways.

The iPhone / iTouch works pretty well for video games.

Here are some of the games I like.

 - A God of War type game.  Not bad for only $.99

 - A puzzle/ platformer with a similar art style to loco roco.

 - An arcade style shmup.  A must have considering it is free.
i
 - A diablo / SmashTV type game.

 - A Castle defender garme.  A good game which is on sale right now for $.99

- A Zalda like Action RPG. Game Play and graphics are great.
