Need bezel help
« on: June 16, 2009, 09:36:42 am »
Calling on my rotating cab pals. I think I painted myself into a corner here. My Cab has 25" of internal space and I am using a monitor that is 23.5" on the diagonal (that includes the bezel/frame).

I am looking for bezel ideas. When the monitor rotates to the point where the corners are closest to the cabinet walls, there is approximately 7/8th of a inch clearance. My idea, so far, was to place a bezel that covers the monitors bezel then place foam board behind (in between the monitor and the round plate that holds it) the monitor, then use smoked plexi to cover it up.

Not sure how well that would look and was wondering if anyone has any other ideas to toss at me.
Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets

How do you have the monitor mounted to that wood crosspiece? I may change my fixed 21" lcd to a rotating setup since the display stand rotates. Do you just bolt through it on to the wood?

Good work so far! I think I'll just end up mounting mine to manually rotate and maybe retrofitting later. I have plenty of room to work with, something like 24x22" bezel area.

I'm recessing my LCD in a piece of black foamboard, I measured to the inside of the bezel, cut it out, and measured the outside of the enclosure. It covers the LCD without adding any additional depth, but is still quite rigid.

I've thought about this for a while (for my own project) and I think what I'm going to do is:

1.  Using black matte board (with a black core) cut a rectangle to fit the entire space
2.  Layout both the horizontal and vertical holes you will need to cut to see the monitor in both positions (the white lines in the attached pic)
3.  Cut out ONE rectangle (probably a square) out of the matte board using the vertical and horizontal rectangles as a guide (the red lines in the attached pic)
4.  This is your bezel.
5.  Using another piece of matte board which will go directly behind the piece you just cut (by like 1/32" or something really small so when the monitor rotates it won't rub the back of the bezel), frame out your monitor so that you will not be able to see through the bezel and this frame when you place the monitor in either orientation.  You won't need anything on the sides but you will need to add some thickness to the top and bottom - make sure the frame and monitor have enough room to rotate.
6.  Get a piece of gray tinted glass to cover everything.  Even close up you won't really be able to tell that there are two pieces of matte board in there and the illusion will be complete.

Does this make sense?  I hope so because this is exactly what I'm going to be doing when the time comes...

javeryh, your example gave me some good ideas, it hink what I am going to try is this.
1. Cut out a circle with a 12" radius
2. Cut to fit the entire space a piece of foam board
3. then cut a circle in the center with a radius of about 11-11.5" This will make the outter bezel's opening a little smaller than the monitor bezels circle.
4. then cut out the rectangle in the inner circle to expose the monitor.

I thought about the circle and I think it comes down to personal preference - if in fact you can see the outline of the circle on the inside underneath the gray tinted glass (which is actually doubtful based on another cab I built), I think I might like the appearance of two "black bars" on the top and bottom of the monitor instead of the circle showing on all 4 sides.  I don't know.  I guess I'll find out!

I'm really interested in your write-up of the rotation aspect - the more information out there the better.  It looks very complicated in general but since there are a bunch of people who have figured it out I have some hope!  Your cab is looking great by the way.
