ALternate to a 4-way nintendo joystick?
« on: June 15, 2009, 04:17:39 pm »
I wanted to pick up a "real" and new Nintendo 4-way or a replica, but after seeing the pricetag am re-thinking thee need for a new replica  (i.e. Mikes Arcade reproduction).

I have a hard time swallowing a $62 price tag.

Any recomendatios for similiar joys that are 4-way with similiar throw characteristics?

Thanks

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

why not make a thread in the buy/sell/trade forum, name your price point on an original and see what happens?  I bet you'll get it a little cheaper than $62.

But yeah, there's pretty much nothing like an original.

Yeah, I can't think of a stick that even comes close.

I see them on Ebay once in a while. You might find one there cheaper if you keep an eye out.

The shorter vs. nintendo sticks show up on ebay pretty often and they are usually cheap. If you find one of those, you will only need to find the longer stick and a 4-way restrictor. The restrictors are readily available, so the stick is the only hard part. Posting a wanted ad is probably your best choice.

There really is no substitute though.

I am very fond of my T-stik, once it has the RandyT mod done to it.
You get a very short throw, good restriction, and the mod Randy did lightens up the spring pressure.
This combo makes it exactly what I was looking for.

For those who haven't seen the mod RandyT did, he unscrewed the base, and inserted washers to hold the "lid" of the base up a bit.
That lightened the spring pressure, but didn't affect the short throw, or quick actuation.

For the record, I was never a huge fan of the Nintendo sticks to start with.
The balls felt too small, and I don't like the cloverleafed restrictors.

I'm not a fan either. I'm glad most sticks aren't like them.

NOTHING else feels or acts like a Nintendo stick. NOTHING.

+1

Good luck finding anything that even remotely resembles the feel of a Nintendo stick.

Try to find a used one... put up a WANTED ad... look on ebay... etc.   Don't waste your time trying to find a viable alternative... there are none.

Those aren't Nintendo sticks, not sure what they are though. The Nintendo sticks look just like Mike's repros.
