Arcade Spinner or Tornado?
« on: June 09, 2009, 10:48:52 pm »
I have an original arcade spinner from Midway, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any pages detailing the connection of one of these spinners to a controller.

I'm assuming a PCB from a mouse would be needed.

I do have a Tornado spinner that's been gathering dust, but received no instructions with it.

I originally dismissed using it because I figured it would require another controller, but I just read that it has support for three mouse buttons, so I was also wondering if it were possible to just use this spinner to make a control panel to play spinner games like Tempest and Arkanoid, and non-spinner games like Carnival and Astro Invader.

If this is not plausible, I'll have to figure out a way to use the Midway spinner pictured.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The tornado spinner has a usb/ps2 interface so you don't need a mouse hack for your other arcade spinner.

To Quote

#  Includes SlikStik’s custom designed optic PCD that utilizes a dual optical pickup interface, support for 3 mouse buttons and switchable (axis) operation via an onboard jumper
# Windows, Mac and Linux compatible and has automatic detection (No additional drivers or software is need for installation)
# All cables including PS2 and USB port hookup are included

The Tornado I have has a PS2 cable attached.

I'm still looking for some sort of manual showing how to wire it up.

And I don't know if I have to change a jumper to switch between the games I mentioned.

Thanks.

It is supposed to use the same interface a the trackball for usb/ps2.   I can find no info on a jumper to change any of the settings.   The only info is on the buttons.

Button Wire Color Code
Left Button - Brown & Black wire
Middle Button - Orange & Black wire
Right Button - White & Black wire

I'm not sure what that is you posted, but at the site it says, "Includes SlikStik’s custom designed optic PCD that utilizes a dual optical pickup interface, support for 3 mouse buttons and switchable (axis) operation via an onboard jumper"

So the question still is, can I build a control panel using this spinner to allow one to play the games Astro Invaders and Carnival, as well as Tempest and Arkanoid without having to switch a jumper or use more than one port connection.

Dude, read the wiki on controls.

Dude, read the wiki on controls.

There is no manual for the Tornado spinner there.

This is all the info for the spinner on that page:

Ok, I just wanted to say I took a magnifying glass and and got a good look a the the Tornado spinner I have.  ;D

I made a diagram and hope I have everything right.(See below).

Nevertheless, since I'll need buttons, I'd appreciate it if someone can tell me where to get a cable for this spinner which already has a PS2 cable attached.(Then I'll be able to test out everything to make sure the connections are correct).

Or can a PS2 to USB adaptor be used instead?

Thanks.

P.S.: of course I'll be modifying the panel so that there are only three buttons. (Two on the left of the spinner, and one on the right. So coin and start will have to be done via the keyboard.

Mmm, I kinda mis-read what you were wanting. Anyways, yes, a PS/2-USB adapter does just that. The little plugs for interfaces like that for the buttons, etc, should be available at a computer hardware store, if you have locally. Very likely online.
