4-player shmups
« on: June 10, 2009, 11:40:30 am »
I've seen a number of us build 4-player panels over the years to
play a lot of great games but they all seem to be beat em ups
or similar type games...
wonder if there's any shoot 'em ups that are 4-player simultaneous?
I did a MAWS search and didn't come up with anything except
some walking shooters, not quite what I had in mind...

Galaxian 3, but I doubt you'll be playing it in MAME any time soon.  ;)

Gauntlet is the closest thing that springs to mind.

There is a Team making a 4 player shump for the xbox 360 however...

There's one called "Turbo Force" which is a 3 player vertical shmup.

Here are other's that you may also consider:
Sunset Riders
Rampage
Rampage World Tour
Mercs (Vertical similar to Commando but co-op)
Escape kids (4 player and fun to play)

Too bad arcades games are dead. Using a nice wide-screen HD LCD screen it would be interesting to make a SHMUP where you got three players sharing this wide screen...
NO MORE!!

Giga wing 2 has a four player mode.
Newbie in working on cabs, expert in playing, breaking, moving slowly, and overall failing at them too.

Ok, this kinda answers my question.  If there are 4-player shmups, there's only a handful, and they're certainly not in the classic space shooter realm or accessible.  (last I checked, Giga Wing 2 wasn't a working rom?).  And I don't know about you guys but I haven't seen a whole lot of x360 cabs.

Anyways, reason I was asking was that I've recently been tinkering with developing my own shmups and was wondering if there would be any interest from this community in a 4-player space shmup.  (or other themes, my program is actually pretty easily changeable). I doubt I'd ever charge anything but I guess if things take off like the MAME folks I'd accept donations and such for custom shooters.

EDIT:  Scratch that last line, sounds too self-serving, that's not me.  Sorry there, folks.  For one thing, I'm not that good; also, it's all for love of the hobby(s).

Hmmmm....... on a side note, if anyone here has experience working with MUGEN, maybe this could be a joint project for the community - it's not just for fighting games after all.

Even more random; if anyone here's a wiz at rom hacking I've always wanted to see a 3-player version of the original Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage and Final Fight. Alien Storm was made as a 3 and 2 player game by Sega so bummed they never did it with GA.

Wow, that looks really cool.  I thought vertical shmups on a widescreen were crap, but with 4 players it makes perfect sense.

You guys are giving me some awesome game ideas.  How about a dynamic shooter that widens the screen based on the number of players you have?  (ie. black bars on the side to simulate a vertical screen if you only have two players or less but widens out to "landscape" if you have 3-4?).

As far as MUGEN, I did mess around with that earlier this year... got to the point of making my own character select and started doing some of my own characters but the sprite drawing just got too tedious and I abandoned that.  I might pick it up again someday.  I remember seeing there were some MUGEN _shooters_ out there if you can believe it, but I don't know how they did it.

Mostly now I've been learning to program using Darkbasic Pro, as it makes handling sprite chores a whole lot simpler for me, which is something I never learned in school.  I've had C, C++ experience before but it's been quite awhile.  Today I'm hoping to brush up on doing scrolling backgrounds.

while this is not really good for an arcade cabinet, since there is no PC version, Aegis Wing on the xbox 360 live arcade is a 4player side scrolling shmup that is alot of fun, plus it is free.

Ok, messed around with my program a lot this weekend and
got a little video of it going on Youtube.  The music is from
Gundam Seed, by the way, and is in the game, but you don't
hear the game sound effects b/c I'm not that great at doing
screen recordings yet.

This slow music only plays during the menu.  There's a faster
track for the gameplay :).    Also, the video doesn't show the
bullets and starfield background real well, but its' there.

Haven't made it 4-player yet, but dont' think that part will
be too bad given my data structures.

Let me know what you think!
