Happ Trackball Calibration Issue
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:06:23 am »
I'm helping install a Happ trackball and have run into an issue I hope someone can help me with.  The trackball is out of calibration and I can't find anywhere in Windows XP to recalibrate the trackball.  It is brand new .  It works fine Left, Right, & Down.  When you go up it veers to the left as it goes up.  This is a nightmare when you try to play any of the Golden Tee games.

Does anyone have any experience with this or could give me some pointers.  It would be greatly appreciated.

I might be wrong here, but I don't think there is anything to calibrate. Trackball is just an upside down mouse. You don't calibrate mouse do you? Take it apart maybe something is raised inside to one of the sides and it makes it drop? Inside is a very simple mechanism, you could just switch the little optic wheels and see if it the effect remains or if you will have problem with opposite directions

I know on my Logitech trackball mouse it came with software to calibrate the trackball.

Does the ball itself veer left or just the mouse?  Have you taken it apart to clean the rollers?  There may be some foreign residue (ie dirt, lint etc) on the roller that is stopping it from rolling properly.  Just like an old style mouse with a ball in it would get all kinds of crap on the rollers, a trackball has the same issue from time to time.

Just the mouse.  The wheel actually rolls straight up.

Just the mouse.  The wheel actually rolls straight up.

"Wheel"?  Are you referring to the encoder disk, or the trackball's ball?

When you roll the ball, does the left/right roller roll also?  (it shouldn't.)  You can watch this with out taking the TB apart; just watch the encoder disk and see if it spins too.  If it does, it's a physical issue.  If it doesn't, then you got wiring or sensor issues (neither that "calibrating" would help much, since the signal is bad).

I mean the trackball's ball rolls correctly.  I'll have to take it apart and check it out.

Thanks for everyone's advice.  I'll let you know the outcome on Friday.

I tried a different trackball and it worked perfect.  I pulled the other apart and cleaned it and it works perfect now.  Thanks for all of the replies.
