Mamewah help
« on: June 07, 2009, 08:38:17 pm »
So I have spent the last couple of days working on the cab, slowly it is coming to life.

I am working on the mamewah front end, cauz I want to run multiple emu types.

Here is the error, well, not really an error, it never starts:

6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM MAMEWAH v1.65 launched
6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM Cursor scheme: Windows default, Arrow: (None), Wait: (None), AppStarting: (None)
6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM Desktop colour: 10841658
6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM Wallpaper filename: C:\WINDOWS\web\wallpaper\Bliss.bmp
6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM Desktop display mode: 640x480 @ 59Hz, 32bit colour
6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM Decimal symbol: '.'
6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM Games list read: mame-0.lst
6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM Mode 640 x 480 @ 60Hz, 16bit colour not available

6/7/2009 3:09:00 PM MAMEWAH quit

6/7/2009 3:09:59 PM MAMEWAH v1.65 launched
6/7/2009 3:09:59 PM Cursor scheme: Windows default, Arrow: (None), Wait: (None), AppStarting: (None)
6/7/2009 3:09:59 PM Desktop colour: 10841658
6/7/2009 3:09:59 PM Wallpaper filename: C:\WINDOWS\web\wallpaper\Bliss.bmp
6/7/2009 3:09:59 PM Desktop display mode: 640x480 @ 59Hz, 32bit colour
6/7/2009 3:09:59 PM Decimal symbol: '.'
6/7/2009 3:09:59 PM Games list read: mame-0.lst
6/7/2009 3:10:00 PM Mode 640 x 480 @ 60Hz, 16bit colour not available
6/7/2009 3:10:00 PM Mode 640 x 480 @ 59Hz, 32bit colour selected after 1 attempt(s) at 1/2 second intervals.
6/7/2009 3:10:00 PM MAMEWAH quit

From what I can tell, mamewah doesn't like the resolution, but I can't figure out how to change it. I have an arcade card and Andy says on the web sight to change the mamewah.cfg file, but I can't read it to change it.

Any ideas, I'm sure it's simple, just can't figure it out.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Looks like you need to edit the layout file. Go into the layout designer, load your layout, and change the resolution and refresh.

So I set it to 60 hz and 32 bit at 640 x 480.

Not sure how to change the 640 x 480 if I have to.

I was just taking a guess. I could be completely wrong. ;D

I only said that because it looked like that's when the error happens.

Anyone have an ini file that works for 1.65?

Since mine doesn't work, maybe if I use one that does and then customize it, that would work?

Set up a thumb drive today with WAH on it. Works just fine on the laptop and not on the cab. Looks to be a resolution issue, as Wah does the following error sequence:

6/14/2009 8:21:33 PM MAMEWAH v1.65 launched
6/14/2009 8:21:33 PM Cursor scheme: Windows default, Arrow: (None), Wait: (None), AppStarting: (None)
6/14/2009 8:21:33 PM Desktop colour: 16711680
6/14/2009 8:21:33 PM Wallpaper filename: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Pictures\green.bmp
6/14/2009 8:21:33 PM Desktop display mode: 640x480 @ 59Hz, 32bit colour
6/14/2009 8:21:33 PM Decimal symbol: '.'
6/14/2009 8:21:37 PM Games list read: mame-0.lst
6/14/2009 8:21:39 PM Mode 640 x 480 @ 60Hz, 16bit colour not available
6/14/2009 8:21:40 PM Mode 640 x 480 @ 59Hz, 32bit colour selected after 1 attempt(s) at 1/2 second intervals.
6/14/2009 8:21:41 PM MAMEWAH quit

On the laptop, here was the successful attempt:

6/14/2009 8:13:15 PM MAMEWAH v1.65 launched
6/14/2009 8:13:15 PM Cursor scheme: Windows default, Arrow: (None), Wait: (None), AppStarting: (None)

6/14/2009 8:13:15 PM Desktop display mode: 1024x768 @ 60Hz, 32bit colour
6/14/2009 8:13:15 PM Decimal symbol: '.'
6/14/2009 8:13:16 PM Games list read: mame-0.lst
6/14/2009 8:13:18 PM Mode 640 x 480 @ 60Hz, 16bit colour selected after 2 attempt(s) at 1/2 second intervals.
6/14/2009 8:13:21 PM Layout selected: D:\MAMEwah\config\layout.lay
6/14/2009 8:13:21 PM No. joystick devices attached: 0
6/14/2009 8:13:21 PM Ctrlr file selected: D:\MAMEwah\config\mamewah.cfg
6/14/2009 8:13:21 PM Keyboard enabled
6/14/2009 8:13:35 PM Mode 1024 x 768 @ 60Hz, 32bit colour selected after 1 attempt(s) at 1/2 second intervals.
6/14/2009 8:13:37 PM MAMEWAH quit

Hoping someone has an idea (besides I'm in over my head  ::))?

Thanks.

Looking at this again, I see Andy states the following on his site for configuring his card with Wah:

MAMEWAH supports 640 X 288 mode in Windows for a flicker-free non-interlaced display with an arcade monitor. (to configure this, look in mamewah.cfg and change the "640 X 480" to "640 X 288").

How do I edit the mamewah.cfg file? I can't figure that out.

Thanks.

The mamewah.cfg contains no settings for the display. You need to edit the layouts.

That kind of makes sense, I'm not sure how to edit a .cfg file though.

Do you mean I have to place or make a layout?

I'm not sure how it picks a layout on one computer and not another?

Sorry I'm so dense!

In the mamewah root folder, there is a layout designer program. Load each layout you're going to use (from mamewah/config/mame, etc) and change the resolution, refresh, etc.

Yes, I have heard of compatibility issues for Mamewah layouts between versions.

It occurs to me that your Mamewah layout is looking for 640x480 in 16bit color. Maybe you should look for the colour depth setting to 640x480x32 bit on your mamewah layout designer. It also suggests that the PC you were using does not have this mode set up properly, but it is available from the laptop.
Check out my completed projects!

Got it.

Had to change from Mamewah 1.65 to 1.67.

Now I have other "little" issues with setup!

But that us for another thread!

Thanks to all who helped! :notworthy:
