Buying Magic Sword cabinet - have a few questions
« on: June 01, 2009, 09:12:43 am »
I am picking up a Magic Sword cab today for $100. They say the monitor is great and everything works perfectly, including coin doors. The only issue is the cab looks kinda cruddy. One side has some other artwork peeled half off, the control overlay is worn and peeling, and there is one rough corner on bottom. The marquee and bezel are there and look good in the pics. I know this thing will need a through sand, bondo, prime, and painting.

My issue with this thing is this:

1) Was the cabinet used for any other games in case I wanted to change all the art and control panel? ( I mean something else I can buy premade from another old game or look at.

2) Is it bad that I want to MAME this cab or is this a blockbuster sentimental cab to some people?

3) Jamma card - how hard are they to install and do I also need the arcade video card they sell or will my pc video card work?

4) Whats the best method of removing all those peeled and torn artwork off the control panel and sides?

Thanks

Looks to be a Robotron cabinet.  You may be able to find someone who will trade you another game to get ahold of that and restore it back to a Robotron or a Multi Williams.

Well thats why I posted. I am new to this and dont want to hack up something that would be valuable to anyone who might want it. I mostly want a good cab as a base for a MAME machine and thats why I bought this one. If anyone near here (Birmingham Alabama) wants to do a resto on this I would be open to trade it out for another cabinet for sure. If I don't get any bites over the next few weeks of posting it here and the trade section I will use this one and maybe sell the electronics from it or something.

Here is what I did with mine:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=63639.0

It now resides in my collection and it is beautiful!!!

It would be a worthwhile project for someone who wants to restore it back to a Robotron or even a MultiWilliams.

Generic cabinets are quite abundant down here in the south.  Even if you don't find a buyer or someone to trade with, you could find an inexpensive generic cabinet to MAME very easily.  You could then put the Magic Sword on the back burner while you do a generic MAME cabinet, then you can tackle the Robotron restoration once you get some experience with MAME.

Believe me, one cabinet will not be enough... you will want more... and more... pretty soon they will start falling from the sky and onto your driveway... your wife will curse you and your offspring... she will threaten to cut your joystick...  :timebomb:

But boy will it be a fun ride!!!
