video card issues with XP
« on: May 27, 2009, 09:56:04 am »
I wanted to upgrade my old machine to use XP but was not sure it would run so I have installed tiny XP to test with. XP starts and runs but apparently either tiny XP or XP in general is having an issue with the video card.

When running mamewah it never displays anything and the log file shows errors about not able to get colors.

According to the info printed on the physical video card it is an ATI rage pro 128 but I cannot find any driver that will work for it. All the drivers say that the driver does not match the card or that the driver is for windows 95/98.

Under display/advanced/adapter it does not show any value. Also running gpu-z doesn't help as it shows unknown architecture.

Anyone know if the ati rage 128 pro card will work with XP or not?

I think ummon had issues with the same card (or similar) recently. Maybe he'll pop in soon with some advice.

If you can conect it to the interweb go system/device manager and windows xp will search for the driver.

The version of TinyXP I have doesn't have DirectX installed to save space. Perhaps you have the same issue?

http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/C/4/3C46A69A-CB0F-4CCA-B1E8-248D43270D5F/directx_mar2009_redist.exe

The version of TinyXP I have also doesn't have any ODBC drivers so anything with a database (GameEx front end) doesn't work. I spent hours trying to make it work and it just wasn't happening.

I think I tried those drivers BobA linked above and they didn't work. No other worked, either. Then I found out that the drivers are inherent in XP, but I don't know if they can be added or whatever via Nlite. Possibly. People have talked about setting the system up so that direct VGA calls are made to the card, but I think that's in a DOS environment. If you're system is that low-powered, you might be in trouble with that setup and card. Maybe upgrade your mobo/processor if you can't figure it out.

I had already tried the drivers BobA mentioned and they did not install. Kept getting errors that the driver software did not match the hardware.

TinyXP does have directx 8.0c. Perhaps that is my problem. I will upgrade that and test the drivers again.

I also tried connecting to the internet and xp did not find a suitable driver either.

However, the good news is that my main problem was with mamewah. I found out that changing my layout has helped some. I can get mamewah to run now but not sure about speed since there is no ati graphics support yet. Will do further testing.

As an update, the problem is solved. I reinstalled tinyXP with the IE,OE,WMP option and then had it do an online check and it found the proper driver and loaded it.

Thanks for the help.

Good to know. I'll have to remember that if I do a TXP install.
