Old Game Board Corrosion Protection/Prevention Products?
« on: May 23, 2009, 01:40:21 pm »
Hi I recently got a Tank II machine that uses Discrete Logistics.
The boards are two roughly 12x17 inch PCB’s connected together by ribbon cables.

The game didn’t work properly so I took a look at the boards and started touching stuff.

Curiosity got the best of me so I pulled on the one socketed chip on the second board.
The chip came out but it left a few legs behind and a few of the legs that were still intact crumbled off when I touched them.

A few of the soldered on chips also have rust on the pins, but not as much as the socketed chip.

I have some replacement boards coming and I should be able to get it sorted.

My question is what can be done to protect these old boards?

Is there a spray or coating of some sorts that could protect an old working board?

I found some PCB Protector Spray things mentioned online, but I don’t know if they were formulated to work on 35 year old PCB’s.

Any product suggestions or advice on how to protect old PCB’s from corrosion failure?

Is corrosion even the issue here?

Thanks.

Corrosion is certainly an issue.  About the only preventative measure is keeping it away from high humidity areas.  I've got the same problems with boards in some machines I bought that were stored in a barn for a number of years.

I like to take a rotary tool with a polishing wire wheel and remove the corrosion from the chip legs, then touch up the solder joints as best I can.
