For $2000 you could get a fantastic 50"+ TV!  You should be able to get a great 40" for $1000 or less.   I have a 52" Samsung LCD, LN52A650 and couldn't be happier with it.  I would definitely take a look at Samsung if I were you.

I have the 61" samsung LCD, I love it got it for like 2400 so you should be able to get a nice 50" for under 2K or a super mega awesome 40" for it.

all my TVs and monitors are samsungs great quality for the price

I got a Sony 4100 series 52". I've been happy with it, but I'm not exactly a TV junkie. No input lag, which is something that matters if you're a gamer. This was the main issue I read about with the Samsungs.
See if the specific model you decide on suffers from it. This TV is like $1600 now, you should be able to get something nice for under your budget.

My cat never paid attention to my projection TV. Something about this one makes him nuts.
Here he is swatting at a golf ball. When they go to the edge of the screen, he looks around the back.  ;D

Panasonic makes the best Plasmas (Pioneer held this title till they got out of the business recently).  I feel like Sharp and Sony have held the high end of the LCD market with Samsung coming in just slightly behind and the likes of LG and Philips filling in the medium end before hitting Vizio and Westinghouse (both of which are pretty damned good for the money, btw).  Frankly, TVs are becoming a commodity.  Get a TV from a good brand and you'll be perfectly happy with it.  Even the sucky ones are getting pretty damned good.  If you've got $2k to spend, you're TV is going to be baller.

I personally think Sony and Samsung LCDs are the best...
and that Sony's color is more natural... (a little more life-like...)
and Samsung's has more contrast... (its so sharp at times things looks a little fake...)
Sharp has a good spec also, but the color just doesn't match....

well... I compared them side by side using the exact same source in a store...
(cos I know the owner, so he showed me....)

but if you buy one home.... since there's no side by side comparsion, it'll basically always be good.... :)
Another Brilliant mind ruined by education....  :p

I saw this on slickdeals...  I don't know much about Sony LCD's, but I thought I'd pass it along.

lcds are whack. you want plasma tvs. panasonic vierra plasmas are relatively cheap and works great. no "burn in" issue or anything whatsoever. I play games for 5-6 hours straight and never noticed anything. get the latest model. I think its the PZ series or something. I have a 42" for bedroom and 50" for living. very satisfied with the result. blu rays look amazing and standard def is good. all colors are accurate and no color bleeding or jaggy edge fast motion scenes(this is where lcds fail..HORD). games look really really good too. Ive had the 42" for 7 months and never EVER had any issues. its perfect.

you wanna check www.avforums.com for reviews.

Yeah, plasma beats lcd every time for picture quality. What sucks though is the weight of them and apparently the plasma gas must be recharged every couple years or your blacks will start to turn gray and the other colors fade. But yeah, plasmas make HD look phenomenal.

thats random myth. you dont need ANY "recharging". all tvs lose brightness after some time. panasonic plasma tvs have something 100,000 hours panel life(I could be wrong) before the brightness dims to half or something. thats like 5 years and 8 hours daily use(forgot where I red this). either way you want quality then you go with plasma. there is no way any lcd can match the picture quality.

plasma+blu rays= GOD LIKE!  :notworthy:

I went and bought a Samsung LN52B750.  This thing is killer.   Looks just as good as the plasmas I saw.  A little bigger than the 40 inch but I asked for but size does matter.  Nothing but great reviews on avsforums and cnet also.

We bought the Samsung LN52A650 last weekend for $1699 ($1000 off).  We love it.

Plasmas only burn in when the same color is displayed for extended periods.  Like airport terminal flight displays.  I didn't go for a plasma because I wanted to wait a few more years to see how they hold up in the long run.

you dont need to wait man. whatever needed to be done is already done with plasmas. they are perfect now a days. cant appericate the picture quality enough. better than crt even.

I still think plasma is going to goaway in the next couple years.  LCD and LED just keeps getting better.  The top end models looks almost if not as good as plama now.  Just my 2 cents

They're phosphorus based, aren't they?  So they do still suffer burn in after time.  How well it holds burn-in off is what I'm interested in.  And their longevity.  I'm not saying they are worth holding off on for everyone.  I'm just still a tad skeptical on them.  And the LCDs are phenomenal nowadays, as well as LEDs picking up steam.
