Gromet, most frontends are made to run the command line version of MAME. (www.mame.net) not MAME32.

I use MAMEWAH... it is pretty good...

Unless I am dumb and you can use Frontends w/ MAME32... (I don't use MAME32; I would never run it on a cab, and my computers all run Linux.

Do you mean the Win32 binary file for MAME named mame.exe or are you trying to run mame32?   Mame32 has a built in frontend and is not meant to run with other frontends.   ArcadeOS is meant to run with DOS mame and will not run under XP as far as I know.

The frontend question is going around and around in the software area.  Look at what is being said and choose whatever fe suits you best.   Remember not to use Mame32 though.

mame071b.zip

Is the name of the command line version of MAME that is used with a front end.  There is also an i686 optimized version if you require it.

By the way   MAME 071 is out for anyone else reading this.

another vote for MAMEwah - it's easy to setup, simple to use, and doesn't have all that OTT graphical crap that most other FE's have (it DOES have a easy to use skinner though!)

Another Vote for MAMEWAH here too!  I started using it about 5 months ago and have had no problems with it.  Do you need to download the new version for skinnning?  I haven't got into that yet?  Also, I've seen a couple Mamewah skins out there, maybe we should start a tread for Mamewah skins?  Can you do a skin per game?  Or can you only do one skin for you setup screen?

you need the new version of MAMEwah to skin it

and you can only use 1 skin at a time

I'm actually using MameWAH with MAME32.EXE.  It works.  My only problem is that I cannot seem to load the "per game" settings with the command line....  The .ini files that go with the game.  Otherwise, command line mame32 works.

I also recommend Mamewah.  I have it setup on both a WinXP and Win98 machine and it runs fine on both.  I've also had lots of fun recently creating skins for it, which is really easy to do.  (see Anthony691's link above)

I'd like to throw my vote in for Dragon King - like all FE's, it's rather straightforward once you understand how to configure it.  And it's really easy to make different types of lists using the filters.  I used his skinner and was able to make a pretty decent skin right off the bat - it's very straightforward.

I really like Emulaxian/3D-Arcade
http://3darcade.mameworld.net/index2.htm
I like it for many reasons
-everything is skinable
-works very well with mame32.exe (it excepts command lines the same as win mame/ dos mame) (I like mame32 for quick searching of games/pics/marquees/cabs..ect)
-Fully 3-D environment where you can walk around and go up to a cab, and then play it!  You can even organize the games how you want them- pick up and move.  Jukebox, movie screen, easy to change gamelists
-Also supports "list box" mode which is what I use most of the time.  It has a list of the games, as well as the pictures of the 3d cab, marquee, screen shot, title, or whatever your heart desires.
-Has internal setup (press page up) so is easy to config once you get the hang of it.
-VERY cab friendly.  I can control everything I need to select/play the games from my cabinet.
-It just plain ROCKS the mameworld!

My 2 cents on the Windows FE issue :^)

I honestly hate this question and wish I could convince the mods to auto delete it anytime it's asked.

First of all I happen to like all the fes mentioned but to the point......

If you asked "What is the best food ever?"
Do you really think the question would help you decide what type of lunch to buy?  Better still would you take someone else's word for it and decide that a food they mentioned was "the best food ever" without even eating a piece?  Would you ignore the foods they didn't mention even though you've never tried them?

Maybe this puts the silliness of the question into perspective.....

Kids all the major fes "work" and all of them are very well designed and nice to use. And for the record(since i'm getting a tad o.t.) all fe's work in xp... some of the really old one's (dos based) might not take to it so swift, but they will still work.  Which one you like depends on you, not what everyone else says.  So go try em and don't ask this question anymore.  ;P

Btw this should be in the software section.

This isn't a flame, just a voice of sanity in a sea of endless repeat questions.  Go check out the software board, people still ask similar questions at least once a week, and yet people still need to ask it again.

Ok I'm done, please ignore if this offends you, but if it does I pitty you and all the anger managment you must take.  ;)

hehe, I'd have to agree with HC here.  Just try them all.  I went through many FEs.  Some are better for certain applications/tastes over others.  I started out with PartyOn because it was customizable.  I am now on lazarus.  I will be having my own sometime.

Hmmm...
Is there a way to load mame32.exe from the command line (or FE) with the game name and the saved settings for that game (ini)?
Why?  No audio in XP using mame.exe.  Tried to fix... no go...  I just want to use mame32.exe...
Any ideas?

don't get your mame's mixed up.....

mame32 = windows mame with a crappy gui slapped on top and hacked in misc ways

mame=mame32 minus the crap (ie command line, no hacks)

dmame=dos command line mame

You should be using mame, not dmame and if you can get sound working in mame32 then you can in mame as well since they are essentially the same thing.  Dos mame (dmame) is the only mame that would give you the symptoms you described.  You shouldn't be using it.  ;)

Having just created a MAME cabinet myself, I thought the easiest bit would be to find a frontend to run on XP. I downloaded a selection but when I tried each one they all had something I didn't like. This may be an impossible question to answer but what's the FE that matches these requirements. Sorry to repeat what looks like an old aged question but I just have to get it off my chest.

1. I want to select a game using the joystick and press FIRE or PLAYER1 to play it. Why do all of the FEs I downloaded require you to press Return to select a game - I haven't got a return key on the Cabinet. I would use ArcadeOS but if I press fire it changes the screen rotation of the game or something like that (can I lock the controls?)

2. I want it to run full screen not windowed. Infact I don't want it to look like a Windows program at all.

3. Maybe a nice feature that allows you to view the game list in the order of most played first.

4. Using up and down to go through a list of 1000 games is a pain, I want to use left and right to jump 50 games or jump through the games alphabetically?

Anyone know of a FE that is as close as possible to that list of requirements.

Also, I only have a Celeron 433 and it seems that enabling the sound emulation on MAME really slows down some games. Is there an earlier version of MAME that runs faster with sound (just using samples), I don't mind loosing a few games off the list plus my ROM list is quite old and later versions of MAME don't seem to support some of my ROMs or should I not be so tight and buy a new motherboard and processor?

I'll understand if I don't get a reply I'm possibly asking too much but does anyone agree with what I'm asking?

Ah.........OK......maybe I should have checked out MAMEWAH before sending my last post I think it might have some of the things I need. I found all of the previous frontends through Retrogames so maybe the link was broken or something.
But you can still comment on my last post if you wish.

I would check out GameLauncher if I were you.  I have been trying to decide on a FE and this is the one I have liked most.

1. Runs Fullscreen and doesn't look like your in windows.
2. Up and Down for scrolling a game at a time, Left and Right for fast screen scrolling.
3. Uses Player 1 start to launch game.
4. Simple design, nice looking, Easy to use and configure.
5. Shows a Screen shot in the background as you scroll  past each title.
6. has good sounds.

I like it, check it out...

If you were getting links from RetroGames, I expect many of these were FE's designed to be used by the average desktop user, so these are likely to not fit your requirements.

Click on the 'Software' button on the left of the screen which details FE's which are indeed suitable for use on a cabinet (most people here tend to dislike > hate the Windozy FE's).

Try all of the FE's in the Software section, and I am sure you will find one to your liking :)

Is Gamelauncher the only FE to use P1 to launch a game instead of pressing a dedicated button for RETURN?

No. Mamewah's base install and Dragon Kings base install both launch games from P1 Start, IIRC.
