I did a PC trackball hack, so I have no mounting plate.  I managed to mount the TB without exposing any screws on the top.

What I would like to do now, is put some sort of black ring  (like a rubber gasket) on the top, to make it a clean finish  (rather than exposing the drilled hole borders, part of the inner wood, etc etc.
Any ideas where I can get this ring?  I was thinking plumbing gasket, but could not find anythin even close to 2.25" diameter.

Maybe use 2 hole saws of the proper sizes to cut a custom ring to meet your requirements. Cut the middle hole first and then the outer.

As for a source of thin plastic try plastic containers or whatever will match your control panel. I found some great smoked black plastic on an old 5 1/4 inch diskette box.

I think I know what you mean. You're looking for something to insert down into the hole to cover around the inside, right?

No, not really.  Just something that would sit on the top, slightly smaller than the hole itself, to cover the hole's border.

I'd look in the search as this topic used to come up more regularly before people started using arcade trackballs more and more...

I know some people use the gasket that is on top of the ball and work that into the mounting design.   (search for Erik Ruud posts for excellent diagrams of his crayola trackball hack)

I vaguely remember somone wanting to try speaker bass ports (and probably cutting it down to just be a lip in your case)

I've seen people make the hole a little bigger and routed so that t-molding would go in the hole...
