Volume slider control appears during gameplay

Posted this in the general forum and got no takers. During games such as Mortal Combat the volume slider appears. Is there a way to change the button(s) that make it pop up? Using Mame .126 command line and Mala 105. Probably not Mala doing this, but I know there are knowledgeable people here. Thanks in advance.

press tab during game play then choose user interface
the first thing in the list will be on screen display
change this to something completely different to a key you dont use
should fix it
