Based on your experiences, what is the easiest method for obtaining a 5 volt source for various applications on your cab?  ???

assuming this is a PC based cabinet, the Red wire from your PC power supply is a good source of 5v.  this is easy to tap into from any of the hard drive/floppy drive power connectors.  that is what i used to power my Utrak LEDs, as well as my novagem buttons.

I know you run the risk of drawing too much current if you try to tap the usb ports. My machine will be possess a hefty amount of LEDs, does tapping the pc's 5 volt line carry an equal risk, or by chance if there's a different limit do you know around what it is? BTW, i'm waiting on electric ice-t buttons from GGG right now, but how do you like your nova gem buttons?? :D

A single power line on USB 2.0 if I recall correctly can only carry 500mA at 5v, that's a whopping 2.5 watts.

That's not a lot of power.

You could easily tap the 5v line off a molex connector off the PC's CPU and get a lot more amps.  The total amperage depending on PSU to PSU, however if you're powering LEDs it'd likely be more than enough.

This is a separate supply for arcades with 15 amps on the 5V:

It also has 12V 4 amps for a nice stereo amp.
