A good height for mame cabinet?
« on: May 11, 2009, 10:30:31 pm »
I've done a bit of searching, and between google and these forums, i think i like http://www.lusid.net/arcade/Cabinet_Design_Rev7.PDF design the most out of all i have seen. My question to you all is how true is the following quote from his website...

"Next I went to an arcade, and measured the height of the control panels at around 36", and the cabinets averaged about 6' 2" tall. I also checked out the marquees, and they were about 7" - 8" tall."

Now, i am 6' even, and it just seems to me that 6' "2 would be very short for a cabinet. Granted, it's been years since I've been to an arcade, so i could just be remembering wrong, but it seemed they were taller. My control panel is 36 inches wide . Also worth noting, is that i have a 27 inch tv i am using for the monitor, and lusid's plans say some will work.
If anyone knows of plans that are really similar to these that would fit a 27 inch monitor for sure, that would be great. Looking forward to some feedback, any advise is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

The actual width of my tv (not diagonal) is 25" 1/2 so this wouldn't leave much room for play.

The DK I'm working on can't be taller than 5'-5" - I think we remember them being taller from when we were kids....

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Average cab height is 6 ft typically. It's shorter because you're taller.

judging by the 3 cabinets i have owned...around 6ft tall is pretty standard.  some are a little taller, some are a little shorter.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else.
I'm 6'4" and my cab in progress is 6' even, feels like a good height to me.

I've been wrestling with this question as I plan my Mark II (i.e. not a hacked dynamo mini) cab.  Been exploring with heights and I find I get a lot of neck pain from slouching.  I have little access to real machines to play around with and match...  but what I find is that with the monitor slightly tilted and with sightline vertically lining up top of screen with my eye level (I'm 6'1") it still hurts after only a little while.

I don't want to make a cab so freakishly tall that others will have trouble playing, nor do I want it wildly inauthentic... should I be looking at a nearly flat monitor much lower?  This is harder for me to gerry-rig but might be worth exploring.  I don't want to make final plans till I've got this worked out.  Have considered a cocktail but I think I'd have to use LCD to get the necessary knee room.  Still really up in the air.

My cab is a little on the tall side at 6'2" (my casters add about 1.5 inches). Most cabs I have seen that are of a similar design seem to be much shorter like around 5'6".

However I like my cab and it fits me perfectly without hurting me after prolonged periods of play (I'm 5'10").

My cab's screen is also not as laid back as the ones it's modeled after which means I'm not looking down as much.

You can mount casters recessed. Takes them out of view too  8)

If your height is an issue you may do better with a showcase cabinet. They are a fair bit taller anyway and as you are stood back you are not breaking your neck to look at the screen, even if it is an inch or so lower than your eye level:

Thanks for all the input so far, lots of good feedback. As for the suggestion of a showcase cab, I'd love one. I just don't have the room. I think I'll use lusids design and mod it a little to fit my tv
