Mame and clones/ 4player vs 2player versions?
« on: May 07, 2009, 09:04:20 pm »
I'm not sure this is the correct forum so please move it if it isnt.  I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this question here..

I currently am running Mame 115 with maximus front end

I read that in order to be able to play certian 4 player games properly (allowing you to select a character instead of it being locked to that coin slot/player start button/controller) i need to find the 2 player version

Gauntlet, Simpsons, captian america etc......

are these games considered clones? they are not showing up in my list of games (i'm pretty sure i should have them thou...so i thought)

do i need to configure mame a certian way or configure maximus arcade front end a certian way? thanks for the help in advance!

Depends on the game.  Yes, the 4p version is the parent and the 2p version is the clone.  I think a couple of games had DIP settings ("Off The Wall" comes to mind).  Check MAWS.  It lists the romnames of the various versions of each game.

I don't know how Maximus works but I had to add the specific roms (not the game itself) to my gamelist in Mala to use the clone.

ok i will take a look. Looks like its under Maximus.....

Select the secondary tab under "Options" labeled "MAME"
Make sure all of the switches are selected based on your preference
You may need to deselect the "Disable unplayable roms" switch and rescan if you receive an alert that no roms are present
You may need to deselect the "Disable clones" switch and rescan if you receive an alert that no roms are present
I'll try it tonight....

My other question which you just reminded me is DIP switches.... does mame save the dip switch changes? i think i tried it once and it did not....maybe i did it wrong.

If you disable clones, you won't see 2p versions of many games.... and Pacman (which is a clone of Puckman - the parent rom)

And it should save dip settings.   Make sure nothing is "read only" in your directories.
