speaker recomendations
« on: May 04, 2009, 10:31:20 pm »
Iam looking to start my jukebox in the near future.  I was looking on the net and noticed that car subwoofers could be used in the home but it doesnt seem like an easy or inexpensive operation.  My next thought is to go with a home audio setup.

Could anyone recommend one(for music only)

maybe in the 600 dollar range? (give or take a little bit)

iam looking for booming clear bass, as most of the songs played will be those which are played at parties/clubs.

hooking up something like that has been HEAVILY discussed in here.

12 volt conversion, yada yada, car amp.

i dont see why people keep doing them myself.

If your building a jukebox its assumed you have woodworking skills (not trying to snooty or snide here, just making a statement).

Parts express has sales all the time on speaker components. You can turn the bottom of your jukebox into an enclosure and mount a pair of 12"s down there.   They have some decent sealed back midrange drivers you could mount anywhere on your cabinet and not worry about enclosing, add a pair of super tweeters up high at head level and you'll have all the sound you could want without having to build arround existing boxes.

If you want booming bass use Professional Audio PA woofers.  Their catalog lists how much volume is recommended for sealed and ported enclosures for the various woofers.  Watch yard sales for integrated amps, the home stereo variety.  You should be able to pick a good one up for $20.  Mine is a Pioneer sx-203.  It will produce way more volume than needed at 100watts per channel plus it has the Sbass button to enhance bass at lower volumes to keep the "boom boom".

hey roving thank you for the reply.

i just got a decent deal on 2 12" subs which got decent reviews with these specs:

* Acceptable enclosure size: .25 to 1.5cft sealed box (larger enclosures INCREASE powerhandling)
* Acceptable amplifer power range: 200 to 1000 watts per sub
* Recommended for typical SQ use: 1cft + 300 watt amplifier power
* Single 4 ohm voice coil
* QTS: .354
* FS: 25hz
* VAS: 41.7 L
* RE: 3.6 Ohm
* BL: 22
* SPL: 84.3 dbwm
* Le: 1.3mh
* Xmax: 23mm 1 way (71% bl, 25% cms)
* Xmech: 64mm peak to peak
* Weight: 37 lbs
* Cutout diameter: 28cm
* Mounting depth: 16cm
* Driver volume: .15 cft

the only problem now is, i really dont know how to pick out the proper amp which will properly power these 2 speakers, are you any good in this dept?

well, taking a glance at those specs those look like car audio subs, the spec themselves reccomend 300watt amplifier.  but they dont go into to much detail.   However, i use one of these.

amplifier

it puts out 100watts RMS, which is ALL NIGHT LONG at that level.  remember we're now talking continous use power levels, not max peak-its going to blow power levels.  I DJ with one of these amps driving a pair of 15 " woofer cabinets and a pair of 12" woofer cabinets.  This is what i would use as a starting point and you can pick these up cheaper than you can a car amplifier and a suitable dc power supply (unless you want to hack PC power supplies)

Of course, your going to have to watch out for impedance matching now since you picked up 4 ohm woofers.  If i didn't already have a few amps lying around i would still, as i said earlier, hit the goodwill/salvation army/ yard sale/ craigslist and find a decent early to mid 90's stereo amplifier.  One with an actual switch for power, before the digital touch buttons.   Most of those were for driving cabinet sized speaker cabinets.  Now you have to find something thats 4 ohm stable. Most of them that allowed 4 speakers to be plugged ( but were only 2 channel ) will be as long as your only using one set of jacks.  The jacks were paralleled inside the unit.
