Scheming on an Ikaruga Cabinet
« on: May 04, 2009, 01:19:41 pm »
I'm looking to build a Mame cabinet in the next couple months so now I'm working on design ideas. It looks like I'll be buying a converted Sports Jam cabinet that used to be a Simpsons machine.
I've always been a big fan of Ikaruga and while looking around, I've been disappointed to see that it doesn't have a nice cabinet. I've put together most of the artwork I could find for Ikaruga and spent my lunch break Photoshopping some ideas together.
I really like the idea of using the black and white featured in the game. While doing research for my 360 arcade stick, I came across Byrdo.org and a nice stick that he created using black and white.

These are rough mockups, but do you think this could be a promising idea?

Isn't Ikaruga played on a vertical monitor?

I like the idea of an Ikaruga cab but not for a MAME machine with a giant CP.  Ikaruga is a very elegant game and I think an elegant vertical cab that played shooters would work perfectly.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Yeah, that cabinet is all wrong for Ikaruga.

I'd love to have a dedicated vertical shooter cabinet, but unless I hack up my Atari Kangaroo cabinet (which didn't seem to go over very well on this board) this cabinet will have to serve as my Mame cab. I was hoping to create a custom theme rather than use pre-made artwork.
So even though this would be a Mame cabinet with an Ikaruga theme instead of an Ikaruga dedicated cabinet, would this still be a bad idea?

I like the looks of that cab.  Given that you can't do a dedicated this is still pretty damn good.

I like the idea of an Ikaruga theme.

Have you thought about splitting the cab down the middle in terms of color?  Kinda like a half black, half white paint scheme...

I'm a fan of black and white cabs (see my cab):D

If those buttons lighted I would have went with them:(

I like it, even if it isn't right for a vertical shooter.

ikaruga theme is good.  split down the middle is a good idea too...one side black with white T molding, the other side white with black tmolding.  could be a pretty cool cabinet theme...ikaruga rocks

I think that the panel should be black, since with dirty hands, food, and just age and wear, if it's white, it'd likely be the first part to go noticably yellow.

Yeah, I was thinking of making one side white and one side black along with two colors of tT-molding. I'm also tossing around the idea of white and uv leds under the control panel and inside the cabinet. As for the side panels, I guess I'll need to look into Mame marquees to get them printed, even though that'll cost as much as my cab.
I can see that this is going to get pricey :P

Thanks for all the input!

the dreamcast version of ikaruga has different video modes so you can use it vert or horz and it wont stretch it, so on a nice big monitor like that it would look great! i have it on my dreamcast cab with a 27" tv with svid and it looks great, its a perfect game to show off that hardware.

i like your color scheme ideas too, i like the one side white with black tmolding the other black with white tmolding and split the marquee so its half and half too. great designs.

I'm a big fan of Candie cabs (which are smaller and and a bit more delicate than our Western-style stand-up arcade machines) and of shmups in general and I totally fail to see why this cab should be unsuitable for Ikaruga. I say go for it, but of course you must find a way to tate the monitor. A black and white theme would fit Ikaruga perfectly. Would you mind posting the artwork you used after you've finished the thing?

After doing more research on Ikaruga, I really found myself wanting a Candy cabinet instead of the huge Konami cab I had.
So long story short....

I bought 3 of them :)

I'm still looking for an Ikaruga disc, but they sell for $300+ and my Naomi system needs a new GDrom drive.

zomg! That's awesome!
I would totally have a dedicated fighter cabinet, a SHMUP cabinet and a side-scroller/retro setup.

Is that what you have there? Seems to me you have the same fighter control scheme on two of the cabinets pictured. Can't see what the vertical cabinet has...

I love your Blast City  :)  Is that an E2 or 3 you have there?

I have three Naomi's at the moment, one upright and two sit downs (and a 15k Jamma woody).

I would love a Blast and an Egret 2 or 3.

If you are into all things Candy you want to head over to arcadeotaku.com.

Thanks!

I've got a Blast City with a 31k monitor, 2L6B control panel, and it's setup for Naomi and Mame (via JPAC!)

The Egret 2 has a 15k/24k monitor, 2L7B control panel and I use it for all my vert shooters.

The Super Neo 29 has a 15K monitor, 2L7B control panel and I use it for my Neo Geo 4 slot and my horizontal games.

In the picture, I've got Progear no Arashi, Ibara, and Mame running.
