help with how to power control panel
« on: May 02, 2009, 07:56:34 pm »
I am making a control panel and plan to56-0300- have 18 Electric Ice buttons wired with the RGB-Drive light module. I also have a back light bulb trackball as well (happ ). I am curious what my best method of powering the unit will be? I am not very knowledge when it comes wiring power to things of this nature but I feel confident I can do it with a little advise.

thx!

would something like this work if I didnt want to wire it to my PC psu and a powered usb hub wouldnt work?

That's overkill, just use a red and black wire from one of the Molex drive connectors. You have 5v across the red and black, 12v across the yellow and black.

Thanks for the advise but the control panel I am building it stand alone and will not be part of a cabinet. my computer is going to be a good 7-10 feet from my control panel when i use it and I would rather not have a cable running from my power supply across my floor were it could be tripped over, especially in party scenarios.  I am looking for a powering option that can be done from inside the control panel.

I don't mind the usb cable running across the floor because if someone trips over it and it comes plugged it shouldn't be a big deal... Im not sure what would happen if the power from my psu to the LED-WIZ were to be ripped out.

Would that power supply in the above post work? I know someone local that runs an arcade shop that has extra parts that he sells for fairly cheap so I could get a used one for a fair price.

How much power does the LED-WIZ use itself. I understand that each led uses 20ma per color...but how many ma do I have to work with after what is used by the device itself. I should be able to wire all 18 LEDs with one color and be under the 500ma that a USB port supplies, so I am curious if I have room to wire a few of the leds with 2 colors and still be under the 500ma USB restriction. If so then I could probably just use the 5v from my USB port, in this case off a powered USB hub.

Just trying to way my options... I also have an older 250watt computer psu in my closet, would that be suitable for this type setup... that way I could just mount it inside my control panel an pull power from it?

You could always just purchase a 5 volt, .5 amp (or more) wall transformer and a socket and plug end for it. That power supply seems like a great deal for the money but if you only need 5v, it's overkill.

The USB spec is 500 milliamp per socket, I'm not sure what the unit itself uses but you should be able to double-click the device in the Device Manager in the System control panel and see what the power draw is under the Power tab.

If you had 18 lights w/ 20ma each, you're really cutting it close with 360 ma plus the load of the device.

Thanks for all your help thus far, and forgive me for being so uneducated but I really am kind of clueless when it comes to electrics. So basically I could just get something like this

Could you point me in the right directions as to how I would wire this up?

Well I'll tell you, the manual isn't very clear on what to do with the three lug terminal. It looks like you would put the 5v from the wall transformer in there to supplement the USB 5v line but like I said, the manual is extremely vague.

I would suggest emailing the company and asking them specifically.

Does anyone know how I would go about wiring up a wall transformer to the LED-WIZ and if this will work?
