SERIOUS ipac4 problem. PLEASE HELP!!!
« on: April 24, 2009, 01:00:35 am »
ok i have my  4 player control panel fully completed using an ipac 4.  each player has 6 buttons, and a player start button.  i have a pause button, a config button, a coin 1, and coin 2  button, and an exit button.  i have soldered the wired correctly to the i-pac4 but when i try to set the keys, there is doubling of key functions.  WHY!!!!  I tried moving some of the buttons to different open slots on my ipac 4, but still the same!  like for example:

my coin 1 button does the same thing as my exit button does.  they both read the same "key J"  in the button config menu in mame.  WHAT THE HELL???  also my 4player left joystick function. is the same function as my damn pause button!!!  WTF.  please i have searched the web for answers, nobody has gotten back to me and ultimac has no contact info.  This is my last resort!!

Thank you!!!

Check ...double check...triple check...quadruple check your wiring.   I cannot stress this enough.  Check your grounds, check your wiring to the button and see if it is in the closed or open position.

99% of the time, this is the problem.

There is a trouble shooter on IPAC that helped me at one time.  Check ultimarcs website for specifics, but I would still start with the wiring.   It is the first logical step.

well i did that today and all my wiring seems to be in order,  the buttons that are doubling are on opposite sides of the ipac as well as my control panel.  also on my 3 and 4 player buttons, the button 5 and 6 buttons dont do anything.  I grounded all the buttons together using ONE ground on the ipac, i originally had the left side grounded to one ground, and the right side grounded to the other ground.  i thought that was the problem so i grounded them all together, same deal.  I am pissed.  but thanks for responding.   LOL

I have been exactly where you are.   Take a step back and go over each button and where the wires come from.

Sometimes stepping away, then looking at it later will help.

I feel exactly as you have and said...but I checked all the wiring.   Guess what....I missed one.

I prefer daisy chaining vs putting them all together.   Any of the connections can be touch hence looking very very hard at each connection and making sure it is complete.   Wires slip out all the time.

There isn't much to know on an arcade.  Either it is connected or it isn't.   Rarely will the encoder be the problem.   Either it is working or its not...no halfway.

Then again contacting Andy might help...but I would exhaust all means first.

Make sure the player 3 and 4 buttons 5+6 are mapped to something, by default they aren't.  I had the same problem

1) Yes double check wireing ...

2) Download and install the I-Pac programming software form here -> http://www.ultimarc.com/winipac_1_2_16.exe

3) Re program the Ipac 4 not all the keys are mapped as said all ready to keys ..

4) If you get stuck in understanding how to program / re program the i-pac 4 just post on here and ill do u a guide as best i can.

these are the codes that have been pre set on the I-Pac 4 ... as you can see p3/4 only have 4 buttons programmed each you need to program the rest your self. Info here -> http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac2.html

I doubt it but if you do have a fault with the I-pac and its been bought from Ultimarc (meaning not from any ware else) then contact andy at ultimarc.com.

All so last point to you. I understand you are after help. next time you send me a privet message please be a little more polite thank you.

It does not matter if it was bought from us or not, its still our product and we would support it. The OP has been in email contact.

Here's what I would do.  Take a spare micro-switch button and put two long wires on the end of the micro-switch.  Make sure the ground it on ground and the other wire is on "NO" which is the closest to the ground.

Disconnect everything from the ipac.  Then take that button and test EVERY input on the iPac, one at a time.  Make sure you don't connect them while the unit is on.  So connect the two wires while it's off, then turn it on and try it.  Rinse and repeat.

As for the player 3 & 4 buttons not working, that's normal.  That is the default for MAME.  Only buttons 1, 2 & 3 are assigned.  The rest you have to program yourself using the WiniPac utility and then in the tab menu in MAME.

Hate to bump an old thread, but I have an IPAC4 that I bought a long time ago for a project that took forever to get to the programing stage.  I am also having the double issue.  Was there a resolution to this? I found it via search.

For example:
p2-sw5 is the same key as p3-up (I)
p2-sw6 is the same key as p3-down (K)
p2-sw7 is the same key as p3-left (J)
p2-sw8 is the same key as p3-right (L)

Does the IPAC need to be reflashed?

That's how the encoder (and the MAME default settings) is set by default. I can't think of any 3 or 4 player games that use more than 3, maybe 4 buttons per player, so there normally shouldn't be any conflict.

If you don't want this (i.e. to keep player 2 from intentionally hitting buttons to mess with player 3), use the software from the Ultimarc website to change the buttons to something else. Don't forget to change MAME to the same buttons (changing buttons in input (general) will change the buttons for pretty much all games).

we had similar problems when setting up our 4player ipac in the cabinet at work..the default config was really weird and we had input conflicts, we had to reprogram the ipac and then make mame match it
