pics of my new cab! have a few questions though...
« on: July 01, 2003, 05:17:39 pm »
well here it is, a Super Master's SEGA cab.  got it for $200.  the guy said the monitor works fine, so i guess i need to figure out how to wire this thing up, cuz i dont know yet. anyway here are some pics...

http://www.geocities.com/hulkamania013/mame.html

i need some ideas on how to make the new control panel.  i have some plans for it, and its going to be probably 48" by 19".  how would i mount that onto this?  i took a pic of the side (3rd pic) to see if anyone can suggest something.  also, the guy gave me some keys to the coin slots and and all that, but the back of the machine shown in the last picture...

has a lock, but i dont have a key for it!  i called the guy and he said that he didnt have a key, and that i could just ram a screwdriver (flathead) into the lock and "pop" it off!  huh?!  i tried that, but i dont want to like, tear it up ya know. i thought about just getting a locksmith to come and open it, but that costs more money.  anyone know how to get this lock off????

They work fine, you just can't link images offsite with your host.

Heh, you're already out of bandwidth. You should check to see if your ISP gives you free webspace. Most do. Just drill that lock out, btw, and buy a $3 replacement. You can probably remove it from the back if you pull the marquee/glass off and remove the light fixture.

Many arcade locks can be turned using a flat screwdriver.   Once it turns you can open the door and dismantle the lock without damaging the panel.  Dont ram it just try to turn it.

Take a small hardened drill bit, place it in the center of the lock.  Begin drilling - slowly.  Eventually the lock will give way.

Make sure that your machine is unplugged while you do this.

After drilling, take a vacuum and vacuum the heck out of everything.  Do that twice.  You sure as heck don't want a stray piece of metal shorting out anything.

- OR -

Remove the marqee via the retainer.  It is possible you may be able to reach the screw holding the lock together thru a hole there.  Not sure about your cab, tho.

apparently you just pull it back, and its spring loaded, so it just swings forward like a regular golf swing.  i may put it on my new board though :)  im sure you can find that part somewhere on the internet.

hey but i need some help still.  i need to know how to mount a new cp once its built.  do i build a shelf out after i take off the old cp?  what do i need to do?!!?

edit:  well i got one of my friends to pick the lock int he back for me...former cop :)  but now i have to remove the arcade monitor so i can start messing with the inside.  i dont want to kill myself so is there a really good way to take it out?  the machine has been unplugged for about 2 years.

Nice score!

I see that KLOV has almost zero info on this game.  It would be nice if you could submit what info you have on the game (controls, monitor size, pics, etc...) to them to be included in the database.  The control stick seems similar to the Skins controller, some kind of spring loaded joystick, right?

If you want to preserve the look of the cab, see if you can build a replica out of wood and attach it to the cabinet with panel clamps like these:

or

http://www.happcontrols.com/amusement/acesor/49005900.htm

www.ultimarc.com has some info and links on connecting an arcade monitor to a PC video card on the ArcadeVGA product page.

also....PLEASE HELP ME.....whats the best way to get my monitor out???

update:
i just measured the monitor and its 19" (you measure diagonal right?)  cp is out now, and im going to unscrew the golf thingy from the cp.  if i were to keep it, would i just plug it into an optipac, and will it use the same thing as the trackball or spinner?

The horizontal monitor should be sitting on a shelf, so you would need to do is disconnect the power connector (Molex connector?) and the video signal connectors from the chassis.  There are probably 4 bolts holding the monitor down to the shelf which will need to be removed.  I wouldn't worry about discharging the monitor, just stay clear from the red anode wire going into the top of the tube.  I won't say that the tube is totally discharged or not, but if it hasn't been turned on in a year or two like you say, the chance of it retaining any charge is extremely slim.

There are probably hand cutouts on the monitor frame, so after you disconnect the wires and remove the bolts, you should be able to lift the monitor right out.

I'm not familiar with that particular control, but I doubt it is optical.  Probably an analog control.  If you can post some pics of the underside of the control, I'm sure someone can tell you if it might be compatible with an Opti-PAC.

Hey dude. A 4 foot wide control panel would look terrible on that cabinet. Even most real 4 player games only have 3 foot wide panels (usually on cabinets that are around 30" wide). Your cabinet is probably 23.5" wide, and thus that 4 foot panel would stick out a foot in either direction

Standard 19" cabinets are a bit small to crowd 4 people around. No way it would be comfortable to play that way. Those cabinets are barely comfortable with 2 people. It doesn't matter how wide the control panel is, since players 3 +4 won't really be able to see the monitor anyway.

Normal 4 player cabs have a monitor tilted pretty far back so everyone can see it. With your cabinet the monitor is mostly up and down, and the sides of the cabinet would block player 3+4 from being able to see the whole screen.

I suggest just making a couple of switchable panels that are sized correctly for your cabinet (or that are at most 3" wider on each side).

It is your cabinet, and do with it what you wish. I am just trying to save you from making a mistake.

Hey, if you don't HAVE to drill that lock, you could pick it.  I've found that most cabinet locks are REALLY easy to pick.  The hardest part about picking them is finding a torsion bar to turn the lock while you're bouncing up and down on the pins.  I'm serious about this, you should try it.  Paperclip and a flathead might do the trick just fine.  Less messy than drilling it, and after that you can take the lock apart and pull the pins out... then you can turn it with anything that'll fit.

I agree with picking the lock, if you have never done it before here is a guide.
