Best CHD games? Ver 0.130
« on: April 15, 2009, 05:03:47 pm »
I have downloaded a few of the CHD's Simpson's Bowling, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter's etc.  But wanted to see what everyone thought were the best CHD games.

All the CHD's are around 89 GB, so don't really want to spend the time and hard drive space for them all, just looking to find the most played ones out there.

I've only ever tried KI, KI2 and SF3.  SF3 is awesome.

Hold F2 as you boot it up, run it from the command prompt to see what error you are getting.

A couple of questions about SF3, which version are you playing?  SF3:New Generation, SF3:Second Impact or SF3:3rd Strike?

When I launch the sfiii rom - SF3:New Generation - I get the following "A new CD-ROM had been inserted.  Do you wish to rewrite the game?".  It then says something about it taking 15-20 minutes.  What do I need to do at this point?  Will it need to be done every time?

No, you won't need to do it every time.  Just the first time.  It's emulating the CD based hardware the arcade ran on.  Capcom would distribute new games on CD and the hardware would copy the new game onto it's harddrive and the conversion would be complete.

If you turn throttle off (F10 or F9 or one of those) it'll go faster.

3rd Strike was the final, and considered best iteration of the game.

Differences between the versions can be found here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_III

SF3:3s is my favorite CHD game. And yeah it takes a bit to load the US version the first time, but after that its a snap. I guess most people play the japanese rom online thou just to warn you - i don't think you have to go through that process.

I got Simpson's Bowling working - it plays a little choppy and the sound is messed up, but it works. You have to do something special the first time you boot it up - can't remember what thou, a google search should help you there.

Also have the Killer Instincts and Jojo running

I really want Blitz, but it runs too choppy on my machine to be playable. Is it just my machine is too slow (not a gaming machine, but not a super old POS either) Is it just high system specs or is it choppy for everyone?

Re: Simpsons Bowling from the Mame FAQ:

Quote
Simpsons Bowling (or any other post-1986 Konami game) says a ROM is bad or BAD EEPROM etc.

To re-initialize the EEPROM, hold down the test switch (F2) and tap reset (F3) once. Do not let go of F2 until you see a message that says "Initializing EEPROM".

That is one hell of a thread.  A little techy and hard to follow.  Can you recap the info about Blitz, is there anyway to make it more playable?  Settings or tweaks?

What about Gauntlet Legends.  Any Ideas about stopping the game from playing in slow motions?

For Blitz and Gauntlet Legends, you just need a lot of speed. It is pretty good with a 4Ghz Core2Duo. There is still a little slow down once in a while, but with that cpu, it is full speed most of the time. Probably 4.5 Ghz would clear up the rest of the slowdowns, but my chip won't overclock that far, so I can't test it. I just looked on Newegg, and the fastest c2d they have is 3.33 Ghz, so overclocking is mandatory. AMD chips won't cut it, and Core2 quad, extreme, and i7 do not give enough of a performance boost in MAME over a c2d (if any) to make it worth the money.

What is thought to be the best version of MAME for runnning the most CHD's?  Is the latest version 0130 the best?

I will just have to wait a few years before I buy a new computer.   :badmood:

Thanks for the infor.
