Custom Taito "Frame Off"
« on: April 10, 2009, 11:16:03 pm »
I got a taito cab off ebay a while back. It was in pretty rough shape. The description said it was in great shape with no damage to the cab. When I got it, the cab was about to fall apart. Water damage was everywhere. You may not be able to see it in the pics but it was pretty bad. I do not know what this was originally but when I got it it had bottom of the ninth in it.

The plan is to totally dismantle, sand, make new kickplate, repair, put back together, paint, and enjoy.
I have a new CP made for it, a 21" horizontal monitor, New kickplate, and a new dewalt orbital sander.

I want to have a Bubble bobble theme. I like it no matter how bad I suck at it.  :P
I tried to get the guy from mamemarquees to do this but no answer from him. Any one know someone that could do this art and print it for me?
What do you all think of it?

That's a joke right?

 :o

Instead of telling you why you shouldn't go with that theme let me refer you to this website so that you don't make the same mistakes they did:
http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/

If you really like bubble bobble then hire one of the guys from the artwork forum, they can put together something really nice for you.

OR, instead of listening to that guy above, design, build, and decorate YOUR cab anyway YOU like.

And, I think the guy who put together that website is a fool. Who the hell is he to judge what people like or build?

@ivwshane
Now tell me how you really feel.  :'( I did not think it was that bad.

I was thinking of putting the original markings on it but I am not sure I like them. I would make the original markings black and (blue, green, or purple).

@IG-88
Thanks buddy  :cheers:

Dont take it personal, you are off to a good start but throwing up images like that really cheapen a product. Sure that's just my opinion and if you really like that style then go for it but most people post their projects here because they want peoples opinion on something (it is the Internet and it is a public place).

I only offered that advice because if you look at all the projects on this site all the cabs that received high praise, none of them had their art laid out like that.

Maybe it's just me but if I was about to do something with my project that wasn't the best idea I'd want someone to let me know.

Im not upset. Just caught me off gaurd with the whole crap mame website. I do want opinions, thats why I posted the material on on here. Maybe I will revise the drawings and go a different way. I just dont want the cab to be solid black with no art.

But for now I have to get it built.

I hear you. Artwork can make or break a cab. I've seen ok cabs go to complete awesomeness after the artwork was applied (see marjtins street fighter cab). I've also see ok cabs go to crap after bad artwork designs were applied (which is why I gave you the crapmame link).

Once you get to the artwork stage I highly suggest looking up waveryder, he is a member here and has some serious art skills that will make that cab look great!

I'm almost to the artwork stage myself and I'm hoping it will take my ok cab to awesome (or to really good):D

You know the current artwork is pretty cool.

If it were me I would sand, prime & fill that puppy nice & smooth. Maybe buy the same stencils for it & do the color scheme of your preference & change the "TAITO" to something cool like "TOKEN".

Just a thought, it would have clean, custom & funky retro cool feel to it you know?

Damn I want to have like 20 different mame arcades now but that just defeats the purpose.

Sorry, I didn't mean to fly off the handle. It's just that site has pissed me off for a long time. Most peoples cabs aren't mameys to begin with but you got to start somewhere. I personally like those off the wall cabs. The more funky the better.

I agree with pinballwizard, that artwork is retro cool. I wish some of mine had that on them.

You know the more I look at it the more it grows on me. How about something like this. Dont make fun of my paint skills.

I like the purple but may do orange and black.

I would choose a color that can easily match joysticks, buttons & trim.

Then you can avoid costly artwork on the control panel (underpaint some plexi with a metal flake black maybe, the kind for RC cars) perhaps?

Of course this is your arcade we are talking about here though so do as you want, this is just me dreaming out loud.

Imagine that artwork in red & black with a red spinner, red trackball glowing, red buttons, red joysticks & red trim with red coin rejects lit up. Or the same with blue, green or purple (GGG has the odd colors in trackballs FYI).

Just some thoughts, damn I want to build an upright in a Taito cabinet now

I'm digging what pinballwizard said! I think that cab is very clean as is and if you were to take that standard taito design and put your own personalization on it you would have a winner!

It just looks clean and retro but not so retro that you instantly think 1980's.

No need to apologize, my post did come off as kind of jerkish (even though that was not my intent).

That may be true but I'm sure most of us wish our cabs were mameys!

Yeh.  Also, Prok sells my old Taito artwork as stencils.  I'm pretty certain it comes with the front  art as well    http://www.gamestencils.com/index.php?crn=211

..and here's a blog on Proks website of someone who has used these stencils.

@zorg
Thanks for that site it has alot of good info I could use.

@spriggy
Thanks, I think I will get those stencils and paint it back to the normal artwork.

@Spyridon
Never played the game. I have already filled in all the bolt holes and am putting it together with 1x1's.
Besides I never did like that color combo with the brown and orange. Reminds me of a shag carpet.

I'm trying to get my hands on a Taito cabinet like that here in the UK, but no such luck yet.  I love the side art on these things.
