Jap inspired cab design in sketchup
« on: February 04, 2009, 02:45:10 am »
I want to make something a little differant from the usual cab that would be mainly for the PC Version of Street Fighter 4. and also I want to thank to Gatsu for the Idea and the sketchup file/ cp. Well let me know what you think or if you have any ideas to help me out?

Make the control panel and the shelve to hold it one thing, and make it wider, matching the width of the whole thing. Then the shelve IS the control panel.
Remove the center-speaker/taxi-sign from the top of the screen. I know Lindbergh's have marquees up there, but whether that is nice design wise can be questioned. At least those are not 15cm deep. The main display will be marquee more than enough already.
Make the bottom a little airier. What is going to be in that huge box? Or is it a dog-house at the same time? That would be smart. Guarding the SF cab.
Remove the feet. It will be stable without. The feet are going to be in the way of your stool casters.

You know these pictures?

Nice clone

Original Sega

And check the eye-height sitting on a chair. I have the idea that the Lindberg clone although it looks very nice, has the screen leaned too far back

And the other famous one, the VEWLIX:

Here the box is mostly needed to hold 1 million YEN coins.

I really like the Viewlix cabs. They have such simple but effective control panel art designs.

Yeah. I'd love to just order a Vewlix....but they are about $10,000 a piece...just the cab...no boards.

And the Street Fighter IV kit is another $5-$6,000. So you're talking the price of a car almost for an arcade cab.

I hope the cost drops sooner than later but I'm not counting on it the vewlix cab is a must in the gameroom when the price does eventually drop to a affordable range

Nah it won't drop for a good 10 or so years I'd imagine. With each cab coming with a full HD LCD tv.....it wont go down for a long while.

I wanna know how the SFIV kit hooks up though. Is it Jamma or is it something new.

k I decided to scrap my own plans in favor of the vewlix pdf Gatsu posted it's a lot closer to the to what I really want. I'm in the process of running the plans through sketchup so I can convert the measurements, and make any adjustments to the design that I need. Also I will post up the sketchup file when i'm done for all those that would like a decent set of plans to work with. The PDf is definitly not a good example of a good plan insanely hard to read.

the control panel and side pieces were alright to read....it was that damn bottom that was giving me a headache....

Dude. If you get a full Vewlix done, I'll have to build one as well. I'm still gonna make the Lindberg, but the Vewlix is what I really want. Im just tired of changing my mind every other week on a cab design. lol

also....can I snag that sketchup file from you when you are done? I've got a lindberg and a candy cab sketchup. That Vewlix will complete my jap cab set. hehe.

You a good woodworker?
You have some very tricky faceted pieces at the front of the control panel. They're little with like 4 different angles on them, and they're going to have to be exactly the same for each side.

Wow I like that cab with VF5 on it, its like the "VS Arcade" idea I had with only one player on one side and another on the other side and its using a big display like what I use now for my PC, heck its halfway like my PC desk so I am half way there :P

Its nice to see not everybody is into the old age authentic 15hz CRT stuff and can appreciate new tech.

If your into new ideas and dont want to copy a cab but make your own idea.  Another new age idea I had to save you on size/weight/cost and make it more portable is to have a half cab with a HD projector in there to throw the image othe wall or a screen.  You can get a 60"-100" screen easy for a fraction of the cost of a LCD that big.

Considering how in-expensive HD tvs are nowadays I doubt you could buy a HD projector+screen at a fraction of the cost.

Yeah you can, a Optoma HD65 is like $700
A CHEAP 37" HD TV is like $900-1000

The HD65 can give you a screen that its easily 60" big and up to 100"

Any LCD in that range is going to be multiple thousands of dollars.  I do electronics price research almost daily and have been on the market for a HD projector for awhile so I keep an eye on the prices.

I also use a 37" for my computer monitor it was $1000 shipped about 2 years ago and it was on ultra closeout sale.

Thanks Gatsu and as far as what cab you build just remember this one is a ton of work.  I'm debating If i'm still going to build it myself anytime soon but either way I still want working cab plans, in the long run this is still going to be a lot cheaper than buying an actual Vewlix cab.   Also a note on what TV to use as MrMojoZ stated you can get a cheap LCD HD 37" but unfortunately i'm sure at $550 it's going to have an 8 ms response time and in fighting games thats unacceptable thats a 2-3 frame delay bottom line your better of spending the money on a good LCD

Ok a 37" 720p Walmart Vizio maybe... like what my friend has and its trash.

I mean a good 1080p set, not Samsung or Sony or some over priced brand just a good quality set.

Send me links please to these $550 sets I am much intersted.

Even the Buy.com Westinghouse was like $700 and its the bottom of the barrel IMO for a good set.

Don't use the 38mm MDF. The core is much less dense than in thinner panels. Glue together two 18mm sheets.

Demmit, Sketchup 7. Still have to buy that version

Resolution wouldn't be my primary concern, but refresh rate.  It makes a HUGE difference.  I have an older rear-projection 720p/1080i Sony, and side by side with a recent model that does higher refresh rates, there's just no comparison.
