Circus Charlie - No Bezel/Artwork Rare for Vertical Game?
« on: April 10, 2009, 03:39:45 pm »
While I have been testing my control panel on my cabinet I have been working on the software side as well.  I have a 27" Wells Gardner monitor that I am using and have decided to use cropped bezels/artwork on vertical games.  I don't like the blank areas on the sides and since I haven't done a custom bezel yet (maybe once I decide on a theme) I have been using the artwork files and cropping them.  I noticed that Circus Charlie did not have any artwork.  I figured it was just something I overlooked and forgot to download.  So I went to Mr. Do's site, but there wasn't a file.  I thought this was pretty strange until I went to KLOV and looked at the cabinet pictures and realized that there wasn't a bezel for this game.  I don't think I have run across any other vertical games that are this way?  Toobin' doesn't have a very exciting bezel, just a plain blue one, but it's something.  I am surprised someone hasn't made one, especially since Circus Charlie seems to have a pretty big following.

I just recently aquired a dedicated original Circus Charlie. It's one of the reasons I got into this entire hobby, sort of my grail piece in a way. I bought circus charlie at an auction about 2-3 weeks ago, and the game never had any bezel (other then a generic black cardboard to hide the monitors frame) from centuri that I'm aware of. It's really funny because a long time ago maybe 2 years or so ago I was the one who posted on the artwork forums on mameworld that they should re-create the inside blue generic bezel for toobin'. At first people thought it was pointless, and then a few months later it magically was completed. Personally I feel that circus charlie does not need a custom bezel in MAME, and that's from someone who owns the actual machine.

That's one of the things I am trying to figure out right now, whether I like using the bezels or not.  I like playing the games at the largest possible size, so it would have to be cropped bezels.  Most of the vertical games out there have them so I like that they fill up the blank black space as well as help to define the boundaries a little when playing some games (Centipede).  Some are definitely better looking then others.

Sometimes I think not using any bezels is better though.  Just having the game up and running, nothing to distract.  I think that might be the way I go if I replace the original glass with a tinted piece.

Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.
