rowe r-83 magazine problems
« on: April 09, 2009, 06:53:25 pm »
hi
I am looking for some advice on the problem i am having with my rowe r-83 juke. When i power up, the magazine rotates and does not stop. The scan led is on all the time which indicates a bad memory unit. But this is an intermitent problem. There are times when i power up the juke and it's fine until i play about 5 selections then i am back to square one.  Also the selections will play in numerical order and not in the order of selection.  Has anyone had this problem or knows of a fix for it. Also i am looking for a reasonable parts vendor, any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Dj69,

Rowe ami jukeboxes are notorious for dry joints (cold joints in the USA) on the connection pins where they are soldered to the boards and battery corrosion on the Memory Unit.

I would check out the following boards in the order below:-

Power supply PCB
Memory Unit
Mechanism Control Unit
Selector Logic

With regards to the Memory unit check for corrosion and replace any suspect components including the variable capacitor C705.

In the USA try Bruce Wentworth at

thanks ami-man i think your right about the solder joints on the memory board. after wiggling the jacks it has been working, except for the numerical order. can't seem to do anything about that though thanks again for the help

I think it was right about this model (or maybe the R-86) that Rowe gave the operator a choice of how selections are played.

Conventional selections are played in the order of the record magazine loading. "As Selected" selections are played in the order the customer selected them.

Rowe had a slide switch on the Central Control Computer for this. One setting of the switch was conventional and the other was 'as selected'.

on the logic board there is a switch labeled test or norm. in the test mode the juke plays songs in the numerical order in the norm position it does'nt play at all do you think this could be the switch that you mentioned earlier. if it is , it must be broken.

Hi dj69,

The switch on the Selector Logic board that says test/normal is the switch that puts the jukebox on free play. Test lets you select, normal is back to coin operated.

I hope that helps.
