Touchscreens, USB or Serial? UPDATED 4-19-09
« on: April 06, 2009, 11:09:48 am »
Hello All,

I have a question about the ELO touchscreens on eBay. I have one already and it is USB and it works GREAT!  ;D

All that seems to be available now are the serial cable type (within budget).

So, are the serial cable ones just as responsive as the USB? Quickness? Accuracy? Response times?

Thanks for the Input!

I have both types and I see no difference.  I have the 15" form eBay and a 17" (ELO), the touchscreen on both of them work great.

I have only ever had serial based ones and they have worked great for me.

My Serial Touchscreen Arrived today. With my brain thinking and probably going the hard route, instead of using a male serial to female serial cable as needed, I bought one of these

The cd they supplied with it was terrible . the drivers CD wouldnt read  :banghead: and after 3 hours searching the 'net, I finally found the correct drivers. :dizzy:

Click here for the correct Drivers -->www.ppcomponents.com/jukebox/HL-340.zip

I uploaded them to my brothers website that I maintain and you can download them from there.

The correct drivers made a virtual com-port out of a USB port. Plugged in the USB end of the cable, then connected to the serial port on the Touchscreen. I then installed the ELO Drivers, which have been updated since March of this year, http://www.elotouch.com/Support/Downloads/dnld.asp. After I installed the drivers and told the install wizard to 'Automatically Find the Touchscreen', It did, on Com-port 3. I only have 2 physical com-ports and now a virtual com-port. Did the restart and calibration and Great Success!

It works great! I think it responds just a tad bit faster than the USB one I have.

The new touchscreen has a monitor bezel on it, i'm going to take that off and spray paint it black (it's now beige and has the Fuji Film & Digital Photo Center logo's on it) and then re-use it.

Thanks for the time!

I had wondered if a touchscreen would work with one of those adapters.  It's good to know that they will.

Thanks for sharing the info!

O.K I have a question?  How about a adb to serial adapter.  I have a new in the box 17" Mitsubishi monitor made in 1995.  It was made for a Mac and the only interface for the touchscreen is a Mac adb port.  I found a few Griffen adb to usb adapters on ebay for around $40 but, I don't want to spend the cash if it won't work.

I found 4 of these monitors brand new in the box for $60 for all and did not realize they were for a mac.  So I'm stuck with them unless I can get them converted.

I'm un-familiar with MAC's but are you trying to get the monitor (video) to work with the PC? If so, this may be what you need
 http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/monitor.

Also, is this the adb to USB adapter?

http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imate/

I also found this http://www.griffintechnology.com/articles/167-do-i-need-software-for-the-imate, and this http://www.griffintechnology.com/articles/169-i-have-an-adb-device-i-was-using-on-a-mac-can-i-connect-it-to-my-pc. The choice is yours.

I say, unload the monitors on eBay for about $50.00 each, I dont think you'll have any trouble getting rid of them. then get you a good USB or Serial ELO touchscreen that you know will work!
