Should I just use the speakers in my CRT TV for my cab?
« on: April 05, 2009, 06:33:53 pm »
Hey all,
I'm planning for my first cabinet- just getting all the pieces and everything together. So far, so good!

Anyway, I'm trying to decide what to do about my audio. My TV I'm using has speakers mounted on the sides:

http://resources.jvc.com/images/front/av-27d201_front.jpg

They sound really good while watching tv, and I've hooked them up with an audio cable to my computer and they sound decent enough-I'm not an expert on how they'll sound in my arcade cab, however. Also, removing them if I don't use them might be a pain in the you-know-what.

Any suggestions? That means that the sound would be coming from either sides of my screen of my cab. Is that weird enough that I should try and mount car speakers or something above?

Thanks!

Maybe I'm not understanding this right but wouldn't that mean the speakers would be playing behind the glass or are you not going to have glass? Either way it seems better to just buy some $30 computer speakers and hide them in the speaker spots on your cabinet.

If you're going to put a bezel in front of it when you're done, it might mess the sound up or rattle when you turn it up. Even though most old games are rather limited in the sounds they produce, I always love punching them up with a subwoofer.

I'd go with separate PC speakers and sub. You can get a set thats good enough for 30 or 40 bucks.

if you are going to cover the tv with glass or plexi, then use other speakers

Just remove speakers from your tv and move the into your cab using a longer cable.

Just remove speakers from your tv and move the into your cab using a longer cable.

Thats what I would do....just cut and add slack to the speaker lines...

Now this is an idea...but couldnt he take some type of weatherstripping ( foam strips) and place that behind the glass to muffle the vibration? That way he wont have to take it apart...But also at the same time...he will be only 2-3 feet from the TV/Monitor....Does he need it to be that loud?

I myself didnt have that option and I went with the car speakers above the monitor...I hardly adjust the volume on mine time to time...

With the options this guy has, I would go the cheapest route.

Maybe i'm a little dumb but if you re not using the TV speakers why shoud you be worried about their vibrations?

The question was if he should use the TV speakers or go a different route

Personally, I would build it in such a way that would allow me first to see how good it was using the TV speakers as is! Then if it is crap, you can always follow the other route. Just seems crazy to me to jump straight into something more complicated before seeing whether or not it suits your needs!

I had a touchscreen monitor that had built in speakers. However, I didn't take my own advice. I built some crappy old PC speakers into the cab. Later, when I ended up testing the monitor speakers for something else, I realised just how good the sound was through them and that it was so much better than what I had set up!

Price is an issue though $20-$30 won't kill me. However, I've never removed the casing from a television before, which I would have to do if I was to remove the speakers on the tv- I'm a little nervous about the whole process. I guess I could read a little more up on it.

Yeah, I would have plexi in front of the tv, so it very well might rattle. I could play around with the foam as someone else already mentioned, but maybe if I'm picking that up it might be worth it just to get some cheap car speakers or computer speakers.

The TV is sweet for a cab but the location of the speakers is annoying as all get out.

I just use the speakers from my CRT TV in my cab and it sounds great, even behind plexi.  I never have my cabinet turned up to extreme volumes because that's just annoying anyway.

I say go for it.  It honestly don't bother me at all.
