Thinking of using acrylic instead of glass...
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:46:27 am »
I was planning on using glass from One Day Glass to finally finish off my cabinet but lately I've been thinking about acrylic. I have an acrylic screen over my Sony 52XBR4 LCD television to protect it from my 18-month old son's curious hands and it has held up beautifully. Plus it's cheaper than glass.

I've found an online retailer that sells smoked acrylic called eStreetPlastics.com. This is what I'm looking at:

Anybody done business with this company before?

I have not used that company however a yellow pages search in your area might turn up a local place that will custom cut your plex for you.  Look under plastics or rubber supplies.  That way you avoid shipping prices and issues with cutting the plex.  1/8" thick is enough.
Remember plex and even lexan will scratch and get duller over time.
FYI, I used smoked plex on my cab with a CRT monitor and did not like it at all.  Made everything too dark and muted the colors too much for me.  Made me wish I had gone with clear plex or glass.
Good Luck!
